Are the Cossacks Part of European Culture?

The Cossacks of the Ukraine were Eastern Orthodox Christian warriors who where anti-Ottoman/Turk, anti-Catholic, and fiercely anti-Polish (the Poles occupied their land back in the day). They fought the Turks and staged multiple uprisings against their Polish overlords. They had a "Hetmanate" in the Zaporozhya region of southern Ukraine. The word "Hetmanate" is derived from a German word.

Though they are obviously not Germanic in any sense of the word, are they Western enough to be considered part of European culture? They were referred to as the "Iroquois of Europe" at one point I believe.

Perhaps you should clarify why they wouldn't be considered.

Armenians & Georgians are Christian, quasi-Caucasian & anti-Turk but they are not European, they are Middle Eastern/Western Asiatic.

^ Based on this painting the Cossacks appear to be of a Slavic-Tatar mix, more Western Asian then European.

    I would say no.
If so, they would be a fringe Euro culture. If that's the case, you could say the Huns are part of European culture.

They're more Asian, both culturally and ethnically, but I consider them honourary Europeans.

A mate of mine owns a small company that specialises in Role Playing Games and he wanted to have a game based on Cossacks and we did some research together and emailed a few people in Russia and eastern Europe and they said that the word Cossack is very generic and is kinnda like 'pirate' as you can have Christian pirates, Muslim pirates, even Jewish and Buddhist pirates etc. so in that sense Cossacks were not ONE distinctive ethnic group, but were a mixture of different people's and there were like wise Christian, Muslim and Buddhist Cossacks throughout Russia and Asia.

well, the word Cossack itself is derived from the Turkish word qazaq meaning "adventurer".

I don't believe the original Cossacks were ethnically Asian in any sense of the word, as they came into being in the 14th and 15th Centuries. Back then, the East Slavic peoples were not as mixed as they are today. Also, they fought the Tatars and other Asiatic tribes at many times in their history.

I always thought they were purely Russian phenomena historically.

    [Shrugs.]

...Atleast that is how they are portrayed in history........

Now there is a long European tradition of mounted infantry known as dragoons in comparison.

Here is some images of British Dragoons:

I don't think it lies in judging them purely by photo/picture alone, we have to look at their history as a people, their origins, their culture, their language, etc.
Plainly speaking, they're considered "East Slavic". But as we know, the more east you go, the more Asiatic you get. Racially speaking, they're about as European as Armenians, Tatars, or Kazakhs, more or less depending on their respective locations. Culturally, they share influence with the Eat Slavic nations like (lower) Russia & Ukraine.

More recently, the Cossacks have been opponents the Communist/Bolshevik state of the USSR and it's dependencies and allies with the National-Socialists.
That's enough for an ally in my book.
