    Things Needed When SHTF

I started this thread as a open discussion on the things needed when Sh*t Hits The Fan ( SHTF ). The purpose of this thread is not to discuss whether SHTF or not, but it is a open discussion on things you think you would need when it happens.

First I think you would need weapons, ammo, and the knowledge on how to use them.

Secondly I think first aid knowledge would be very handy.

Other things I will discuss later.

Please feel free to add your input and thoughts on this matter that way we can all learn from each other.

Places to go. You can not just rely on staying at home because it may not be feasible. Always have a back up plan.

Right now I have two military issue canteens from the Vietnam era, I've got Y-Suspension web gear, a tac vest with 9mm and .223 ammo pouches, I've got a hiker/mountain biker water bottle, a 150 lb draw weight crossbow for hunting (needs a new string and some bolts though), got the necessary camo and for just in case the bullets run out I've got steel medieval armaments for melee situations (chain mail coif, sutton hoo helmet replica made from 18 gauge steel, high carbon spring steel Kindjal with full profile tang, Danish medieval hand axe made from high carbon steel, a full tang peened pommel Anglo-Saxon/Scandinavian single hand sword, a 6 ft staff, a 4 ft staff, a CSA cavalry saber made from high carbon spring steel with full tang and peened pommel).

For the web gear I've got a butt pouch which holds a current military issue digi cammo poncho which can be used for temp shelter, and I've got some decent binocs and a range scope for spotting game.

Gonna spray paint the chain mail and helmet black to decrease the glare.

I've also got a hunting rifle at my disposal. Hoping to acquire a Ruger mini 14 .223 and a 9 mil.

I think the paint would wear off, you could try several other more permanent things like boiling the chain mail in cider vinegar, heat the mail to a dull red glow in a fire and quench it in used motor oil then clean the oil off. Both of these things will blacken the metal and help protect it from rust.

Nice, thank you much for this post, I need to go out to my grandfather's property in order to do that though, unless one could do such a thing on a stove top in an Akron city apartment. lol

Books on woodcrafts and basic living, while I know it is not practical to carry books with you when SHTF and you are in the woods. If you read and re-read these books it would expand your thinking to give you ideas when needed.

Knowledge is the most essential thing. If sh*t really hits the fan you may become separated from your survival gear for an unknown period of time and you need to make sure you have the know how to survive without it.

Know what foods will be available for foraging at different times of the year in your area. Know your land, be able to navigate without compass or map in your area. Know your plan. The list goes on and on.

I would say that you should have your knife or a good multi-tool on you at all times.

A TV so you can watch Bear Grylls.

Binoculars would probably come in handy, and you can never go wrong with some rope/string. Warm clothes for the winter so you don't turn into a block of ice sound good as well.

And most importantly, another person who can watch your back!

Mobility- decent 4x4 in my area is a must. 300 gallon fuel tank in yard. A horse would be better.

Sustainability- live in an area with adequate game. Live near running water like a creek or river. Keep enough food for your family for one year at all times. Keep it moblie (I can hook up to my trailer that permanently contains my camping/trapping/fishing/food storage and drive away right now with 2 minutes notice).

Skills- spend free time learning woodlore and subsistance lifestyle skills. Being able to fight and defend is important, but any knucklehead can do that. The whole family should have skills. My wife made she and I pairs of boots this summer. Tan hides, skin animals, raise food.
