By reading all this, I cant wait when SHTF!
I would ask Spearbrave for some crafting skills. And then I ask Cadwallon If I can join him in his lonely struggle.

In a survival situation you have to take care of:

    Water

    fire

    food

    shelter

And most likely in protective measures against 'brothas' and other animals.

water can be stored or filtered and boiled. a primitive filter can be made out of clay, bottle, glasscontainer and be filled with grass, charcoal, pebbles, sand etc. I have seen somebody filtering water out of a muddy puddle, boiled it and made some pine-needle tea out of it (lots of vitamin C).

Right now I am studying orgone technology and rainmaking. Wilhelm Reich (ok, he was a jew) figured a method how to make rain and proofed it several times. So rain can be made and thus water. there is also equipment to drill about 200 feet deep. The equipment cost you about 500 bucks but it gets you down to groundwater.

fire can be made with a few sticks combined in an intelligent way, some determination and a prayer to the fire god. Have done that and it works (cedar wood seems to be the best)

food: I am making pemmican right now and will have that stored in claypot caches whose places only I know. other then that I learned trapping. They are easy to make and you just put them up and check them once a day. Gives you plenty of time for other things. Hunting is good here but don't know how it looks if a lot of hungry people are coming out here, there for food supply for a year might be good, then most of the foreigners here are either dead or gone.

I also use roadkill for making pemmican. (the dogs love it too and you want to have a dog when the shtf). the roadkill test is to pull the hair from the belly, if it comes out you better leave it. Smell is also a consideration. Fresh roadkill, a few hours old is often available. (though in California it is forbidden to take but nobody really cares)

Shelter: I have a house and also know to build primitive shelter in case that is not useable for any kind of reason.

protection against 'animals': Guns, weapons, dogs, traps (vietnam style). most of all there is a group of people, mostly friends around many of them with a military background who will function as a formidable force in case groups of animals are coming. I also looked into access to the area where I live and know where to put watch posts to control access to the valley.

networking seems to be the best thing. right now I know people who grow all kinds of food, I planted walnut trees (have to be irrigated though but some survive in this climate) (pemmican with walnut nuts are tasty, a bit honey to it and olive oil/butter/animal fat is just great). There are a lot of people around here who tapped the knowledge of the natives (Maidu) and have all kind of skills.

healing is something which interests me, my wife knows a lot about herbal remedies and there are others around like doctors who live here.

I think were I live is a good spot to get through the difficult times what comes after a year, I don't know.

This is a very good and important point, you need fire.

I personally carry 10 or more mini bic lighters, but on the long term it would be a good idea to know how to start fires useing more primative methods.

    Fire bow

A flint and steel is also good to have just in case.
Life is like a fire hydrant- sometimes you help people put out their fires, but most of the time you just get peed on by every dog in the neighborhood.

As far as fire is concerned, in my hiking pack I have a magnesium stick that has a piece of flint on it. I also have quarter of a ziploc baggy filled with magnesium shavings in case I really need to make a fire fast. Like lighters it will eventually run out, however when lit it burns white hot for a reasonable amount of time wet or not.

Good question... well, at least it's rechargeable.

I think you might run out of bullets for the Dillon Aero Suburban a bit more quickly though...

I have a few I can think of that I would want on my person:

-Good fixed blade knife and sharpening stone.

-Hunting Rifle with high caliber and good optics.

-Small light weight air rifle like the ones you get for kids made from composite materials.

-A pocket knife preferably a Leatherman or Victory Knox, you don’t want to blunt your good knife on something like dinner.

-Pistol, preferably something that has more rounds rather then higher caliber, like a Beretta, Glock or CZ with a 15/16 round magazine.

    -Ammunition.

-Decent Leather hiking shoes or the like, preferably a boot for ankle support.

-Tuff earth colored garments with as little embellishments as possible.

-Water proof jacket and appropriate additional thermal clothing like vests and pullovers.

-Water proof hiking backpack with a frame for comfort.

    -A sleeping bag.

-Basic pot for cooking and boiling water (including salt).

-A few clean changes of sox and undergarments.

    -Multi Vitamins & Electrolytes.

-Basic first aid kit preferably with some anti-septic ointment for cuts and burns.

-Basic fishing tackle and nylon gut which can be used to sew and mend many a thing, can also be used to trap dinner.

-A reasonable sized water canteen preferably metal.

    -A decent length of rope.

-A torch, LED Maglight is good on the batteries, a little heavy though...

-Binoculars and map of the area including a compass

-Piece of PVC plastic for ground cover or a roof.

    -Soap.

    -Flint and Magnifying glass.

-A Zippo, with flints, a large can of fluid and wicks.

-Ample supply of tobacco, because I smoke and because it can be traded when others run out...

-A good wide brimmed bush hat and sunglasses, if you have space left in your pack take some sun screen along (especially in Africa)
Although the word "Commando" was wrongly used to describe all Boer soldiers, a commando was a unit formed from a particular district. None of the units was organized in regular companies, battalions or squadrons. The Boer commandos were individualists who were difficult to control, resented formal discipline or orders, and earned a British jibe that"every Boer was his own general".
