    Folk Dance Show on BBC4

I've just seen this excellent show on BBC4 all about Folk Dancing.

I've got to be honest with you and I've always thought Morris Dancers as a tad eccentric and rather odd but watching this show was a real eye opener for me.

Definitely one to watch if you've got BBC4 but you can see it on-line at this site:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00wgrtr

It's great to see normal honest folk doing something that's traditional and in some way trying to preserve the character of our culture and society.

We don't live that far from Abbot's Bromley and it's motivated us to drive over there next year and maybe see the Stag dancing.

Most shows on the 'Beeb' are pretty naff and reek of PC thought control but now and again they come up with something that's a proper gem!

Definitely one to watch if you're in anyway shape or form interested in Western culture and tradition.

Watched that last week, we need to keep these traditions going. We only live about 15 miles from the Straw Bear festival, go most years great fun.

Ha! Looks a bit like the Wickerman!

That looks really cool, I wouldn't mind having a look at that myself one year.

Yeah the thing about the Germans, I have to wonder if different folks have similar folk customs in their countries, I think we get to empathise and understand our cousins more if we see the similarities that we share also it does look like fun and nothing brings a community closer together than that.

Morris/ folk dancing is one of the last remnants of our traditional way of life, no wonder then that as you pointed out

you thought it was "odd". That is what people have been led to believe and taught, that it is odd, uncool and stupid. Part of the cultural brainwashing.

The costumes always remind me of those worn by our more culturally aware germanic neighbours.

I missed this prog, so will have to look out for a repeat. I posted a favourable Daily Telegraph preview up here, the other day.

I've had the good fortune to see a rapper dance (no, not the N-Dubz variety!) and a mummer's play in recent years and you hear about them more and more - we are definately witnessing a real shift in attitude and revival.

I think this is in some part due to people having all other cultures rammed down their throats, and so in turn they seek out their own.

I remember a few years ago i saw some morris dancers in Brighton on the level giving a display.
They turned up in an old camper and a shagged out ford anglia with a massive anarchist A painted on the bonnet.

Anyway they got do do their stuff and went through a few different dances explaining to people the significance and importance of the dances to the public and then they went through a few more contemporary dances one of which was danced to Anarchy in the UK by the sex pistols....and watching this old boy smoking his pipe and belt out anarchy in the UK on his squeezebox was a sight i shant forget in a hurry...totally straight faced.
They were a mixture of young and old and if i remember rightly they were from Lewes just up the road....really very good and the public loved it all.
