    Germanic Heathenry: Where to Start?

I am hoping someone can help me. I recently decided to try and learning about the original religion of my ancestors before christianity and i came across this site. From the limited resources I have I am able to trace my ancestors to Ireland, Netherlands and Poland.

Any advice on reading material would be greatly appreciated.

    A couple other things..........

You might read some of the Icelandic Sagas, especially "Njal's Saga".
The Sagas give you an idea of some of the Culture of the Nordic Folk and what were probably the last of the Practicioners of our Ancestral Pre-Christian Religion.

The present day Reconstruction of our Ancestral Religion can be found in many places & many variations. There is Folkish Asatru, which is Icelandic/Scaninavian leaning. It is probably the most racially directed.

There is Anglo-Saxon Heathenry with it's Anglo-Saxon bent. And there is the Thodism with it's Norman direction. These groups are considered more Tribal and Hierarchical. They focus on the Tribal structure as an integral part of the Ancestral Religion.

You can find a great deal of information on Folkish Asatru, Northern Heathenry, Germanic Heathenry, Anglo-Saxon Heathenry and Theodism with Web-searches on those Topics.

I would suggest picking up a copy of Crossly-Hollands "Norse Myths" to start with. It can be found for a couple of bucks on abe.com ... It tells the stories from the Edda's in a storyteller fashion which makes then reading the actual various translations of the Edda's easier...

I would highly recommend Chisholms version of the Edda, which can be d/l in pdf form from Gamall-Steinn.Org , just google it...

As to the actual practice of the religion. If you can find a copy of Chisholm's "True Hearth" I would suggest it. Also when you know a little more and have read the Edda's, p/u Coulter's book "Germanic Heathenry".

Remember, abe.com is your friend when looking for cheap decent copies of books...

For the past few years I've occasionally Googled "Paganism" or something similar because I'm fascinated by it. Every time I do however, I get all of this Wicca and teenage Witchcraft spell making stuff. The only person I know of that speaks on Paganism is Varg Vikernes, but I definitely wouldn't trust everything he says. I've read that Pagans have lost their traditions and religion thanks in large part to Christianity, so it seems difficult to find more authoritative depictions of their practices in years past.

Basically, I don't know if it would be worth sifting through the sea of confusion online to see what Paganism really is.

Oceanborn, try searching for 'Heathenism' instead, and you'll run into much less of the new-age gobble-dee-goo.

I am new to studying Germanic Heathenry, but what I've found helpful are the works of Stephen McNallen and the Asatru Folk Assembly as a jumping-off point, and then from that check out other resources. These resources help give a proper grounding and to sift through the New Age distortions.

I do prefer the term Heathenry since "Asatru" is more Icelandic and I want to connect more with my Alpine Germanic ancestors and I don't have any connection to the Norse lands; or perhaps Wotanism and being a Wotanist. But what's more important is the reality and not the name so much.

I've also found works by Georges Dumezil and Hilda Ellis Davidson helpful in connecting all the lore and myths together, including in a broader Indo-European context....But searching through this forum has also been helpful, as there are clearly people who've walked the walk and talked the talk - the best to learn from.
