Sad Liquid Over Laptop, Keyboard Issues - What Now?

Well, last night it happened - after practicing knife-throwing with a friend, a couple of beers were involved, and having two left hands (or should I say, two right hands?), a can of beer toppled over, spilling directly over my laptop's keyboard.

I've put it on the radiator to dry, last time (still with the old laptop, and it was water then) this helped. When I switch it on, it works once without issues, but another time I get a HP-Login-Failed screen (in grey) even before starting BIOS.

Even when everything is working, the keyboard has issues: The keys 1,2, 3, 8, Backspace, Space, F, and B don't react at all (meaning in my special case, I can't even type my password). However, using an external keyboard works without further troubles.

However there is also another issue: After switching it off and removing that external keyboard, the laptop starts up all by itself.

Des Weiteren scheint sich aber irgendetwas mit den Anschlüssen verschoben zu haben, denn als ich nach dem Ausschalten die externe Tastatur wieder entfernte, startete der Laptop von selbst.

So, well, I am looking for advice what else I can do. Do I have to open it up and wash the keyboard, or is there anything I can do before that? I'm a bit of a notorious clumsy person who knocks over his drink every other week, but with the laptop it's been the first/second time (luckily), so I'm fairly cllueless.

I had the exact same thing happen to my friends laptop. He tried draining the water out but it still had problems like you are having (keys not working). My friend was terrified that he might have broken his laptop.

So what we did was turn the laptop upside down (not completely upside down but at a steep angle so the air could get into the keys)- then we placed a very powerful fan blowing air at it for 24 full hours.

After the 24 hours we turned it back on and it worked fine.

You can remove the keyboard from your laptop and rince it with water. Let it dry good If it dosnt work you can get replacement keyboards which you can install yourself, they have alot of these on ebay.

Do I have to completely take the whole thing apart for that, then? The mainboard should be fine though if it allows itself to be switched on without further ado?

On my laptop I can remove the keyboard without opening the laptop itself, it depends from model. Seems like the motherboard is okay then, but I dont know so much about hardware

Well, the problem is when liquid flows into keyboards, this messes up the contacts. So even when its completely dry again, it wont get better (such an experience once killed the remote control of my tv...).

When the removing of your external keyboard restarts the pc, it could be a "hardware guard", so thats not necessarily a problem caused by that accident. (to find this info depends on your OS whether it gives that info, because, at least in my pc, there is a hardware component which you have to disable by a switch, so also an operation on open heart so to say on a laptop when the OS doesnt offer the option, though as said not necessarily something to worry, when it doesnt happen 'just so').

When you can remove the key-covers, you can try deep-cleaning the contacts (with a Q-tip or something, carefully). If it hasnt 'eaten' through to the wires yet, this may save your keyboard.

If not, I guess you need a new keyboard then...

What HP model do you use Sigurd?
Although the word "Commando" was wrongly used to describe all Boer soldiers, a commando was a unit formed from a particular district. None of the units was organized in regular companies, battalions or squadrons. The Boer commandos were individualists who were difficult to control, resented formal discipline or orders, and earned a British jibe that"every Boer was his own general".

That´s why you should use a stationary tower PC, Sigurd. Because I´ve spilled some Apfelsaft over my keyboard in the past as well, but since keyboard and computer are segregated it was no real problem. I can remove every single key of my keyboard so I can clean the area below the keys with a damp wipe.

Maybe you shouldn't have turned it on first.

I once spilled some apple juice on an old laptop of mine. First I removed the battery and then pulled up each key individually. I then used a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean away the sticky as best as I could. I also cleaned the keys with rubbing alcohol as well. I let it sit for a couple of days with a small fan constantly blowing on it.
Your biggest worry should be what happens in the long run because beer has a small amount of sugar that can cause the connections to corrode.
If the beer penetrated too deeply then you may have to have it professionally cleaned or even replaced altogether.

@Ronan: The last time I poured something over my keyboard everything was fine after drying it, so I thought that's all that it'd take, so I did have to check whether things were working, as I didn't know if anything else was broken.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I'll open it and do something about this. Some computer forum people adviced me to try Isopropanol if water don't work ... The way it seems, the rest went undamaged; if the rest has some of it then yes, I might have to do something about that as well. Would, as a last resort if nothing else works, washing the mainboard in lukewarm water before drying it kill the thing?

Unfeasible for me, how would it look if I took a tower PC to my lectures?
