    Number of Overweight Americans is Still Growing

    The Associated Press

    Citizens of the world's richest countries are getting fatter and fatter and the United States is leading the charge, an organization of leading economies said Thursday in its first ever obesity forecast. Three out of four Americans will be overweight or obese by 2020, and disease rates and health care spending will balloon, unless governments, individuals and industry cooperate on a comprehensive strategy to combat the epidemic, the study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said.

    The World’s Top 10 Fattest Countries

    The World Health Organization has recently released the results of health surveys taken between 2000 and 2008 on world obesity, and the news isn’t pretty.

    Since obesity rates can be an indicator of a nation’s nutritional trends, health and culture, we thought it might be useful information for the expat to know.

    Here are the 10 fattest countries of the last decade:

    (1) American Samoa, 93.5% (of the population that is overweight)

    It’s a staggering number. Many Pacific Island nations have had trouble with weight in modern times mostly because they have abandoned their traditional foods for cheap, easily attained processed foods from the West. Perhaps no other Pacific Island has had such access to these habits as American Samoa.

    (2) Kiribati, 81.5%

    Like American Samoa, Kiribati has been flooded with processed foods like Spam and mutton flaps (fatty sheep scraps), often sold at lower prices than native food.

    (3) U.S.A., 66.7%

    Well, the U.S.A. doesn’t top the list, but it’s close, and it falls behind only a small islands nation and one of its own unincorporated territories. The United States of Processed food, high fructose corn syrup and fast food has been high on this list over the last half century.

    (4) Germany, 66.5%

    The fattest country in Europe no doubt owes their portly woes to lots of beer, fatty foods and inactivity.

    (5) Egypt, 66%

    Obesity among Egyptian women is particularly high, often attributed to cultural taboos on women exercising or playing sports.

    (6) Bosnia-Herzegovina, 62.9%

    Once considered a problem only in high-income countries, obesity is dramatically on the rise in low- and middle-income countries like Bosnia-Herzegovina, where smoking, drinking and eating unhealthy foods spiked during the war that ravaged the country from 1992 to 1995.

    (7) New Zealand, 62.7%

    Obesity is a growing concern for New Zealand. While its native Maori have struggled with weight due to loss of traditional culture like other Pacific Islanders– they are mostly just a scapegoat. New Zealand’s entire population is getting fatter at a rapidly increased rate.

    (8) Israel, 61.9%

    In the past 30 years, the number of obese Israelis has tripled, evidence the country is truly part of the Western world.

    (9) Croatia, 61.4%

    Croatia, where cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death, is also a victim of the globalization of the food market, which tends to suppress traditional diets as cheaper processed foods from the U.S. and Europe flood store shelves.

    (10) United Kingdom, 61%

    A recent survey ranked Brits among the bottom third of European nations in physical exercise, leading Health Secretary Andy Burnham to comment, “We’re really in danger of being known as the best in the world for watching sport, but one of the worst for getting out there and doing it for ourselves.”

    My question is: Where do they get their numbers?

    I don't know about other places, but mostly doctors here use "The Chart". IMO The Chart is a bunch of bullshit. It doesn't really take into account muscular mass, and barely acknowledges heavy or light frames.

    The BMI is also bullshit, as it doesn't take into account all of the factors.

    How many of these studies have a "statistically significant" sample (usually recognized to start at 10,000 data points, although for the populations of these countries, it'd be closer to a millino data points, spread out over the borders of EACH country for EACH age group). And how many of them are spending the money to do a proper body composition test for EACH test subject?

    Why do I ask? Because the term "overweight" tends to be grossly misused.

    Now everyone can spot a lard ass (obese). Problem is, people over their "Chart weight" are called overweight. Got news for you, strength athletes will always be over their chart weight. They may have an 8% body fat, but will be called "overweight", when someone that has 16% bodyfat, but makes their chart weight, will not.

    Now, what are the causes?

    Well, it start with genetics. Some folks are endomorphs and will easily put on fat.

    A lot is the upbringing. Parents who want to come home and sit on their ass in front of the TV instead of getting outside and doing something physical with theikr kids are doing them no favor. Making the family meal a prepackaged box of sh*t from the freezer sectgion won't help, either. Children carry these habits into adulthood.

    What to do? Adults or children need to develop good eating habits. Make some damn food, don't just nuke something in a box. It's healthier and saves money. If you're smart you can eat leftovers and variations thereof for several days. Enough good eating, and you may have a craving for some junk, and can indulge now and again without blowing up like a lard balloon. If you're like me, I've gone so long without junk food that if I eat a bag of chips or go to McD's, my intestines will do a "warp core dump" in short order.

    Get off your ass. Just getting in your yard and working helps your health. I don't care how smal your yard is. I know a guy that has about 20 feet on either side of his house, and maybe 35 feet in back. he grows exotic plants on the perimeter of his yard, and they require constant tending, so he has plenty of work.

    Live in an apartment? Clean the buiilding and grounds (you can often negotiate a rent reduction for doing so). or just walk the neighborhood and pick up garbage. It's not glamorous, but it helps.

    Go for a walk. Keep your heart rate at 80% of maximum for 45 minutes, and your body releases enzymes to burn fat. Go camping and pitch a tent, make a campfire. Also makes a goold time with the family event. Take the family canoeing -- you know, where you paddle the thing.

    Get a few dumbbells or kettlebells and you can work out in your living room.

    Develop good eating and exercise habits and teach them to your kids. You can't change other people, so don't worry about them.

    I wonder why this is.

    It not about that healthy food is expensive. It is more the lack of capacity to think about the long term effects such a diet will have on their health.

    I wouldnt have thought that people who were hard up could pig themselves all day on fast food.
    Im quite well off and dont think i could afford it.

    You're partly right, but wrong in that healthy, unprocessed food is more expensive, at least where I live. You're almost forced to eat garbage if you aren't well off.

    Germanics who are financially desperate turn to food as a way to help them cope with its many depressing aspects. Overeating is a form of escape and may be as close to living a life of luxury as they can get.

    The caricatured image of rich American "fat cats" are of obese White men with huge cigars and massive guts, the symbolic equivalent of pots of gold. If the poor cant hoard actual gold then they will find cheaper, delusional alternatives, and stuffing their bellies with food happens to be one of them.

    (The jet-setters of the world are indeed among the most trim, right up their with anorexics and starving Appalachian babies.)

    Also, much of the food they buy tends to be of the cheap, junk food variety. Fruits and vegetables are expensive. You would be amazed how quickly a steady diet of Snickers bars will put on the pounds. Cheaper meats tend to have a lot of fat as well. Poor Germanics will eat the fat in order to not waste anything.

    Not only that, but the cheapest foods are staple carbohydrates. When you eat a lot of carbs, you pack on the pounds, fast.

    Pastas, rice, potatos and starchy beans -- lots of carbs.
    Poor people also can go a long time on a big jar of peanut butter and a couple loaves of bread -- lots of carbs, lots of fat, lots of calories.

    Obesiety

    The human body follows a rather simple equation:

    Ci - Ce = Fa

    Where:
    Ci = caloric intake
    Ce= caloric expenditure
    Fa= fat accumulation

    More calories, less expenditure, more fat. Simple as that.

    The solution, increased expenditure via physical activity and decreased consumption of food stuffs. As any Doctor will tell you, "Eat less, exercise more and stay hydrated"!
