The English Defence League has said it will defy a Government ban by marching through Leicester.
Home Secretary Theresa May yesterday ruled the group – and its opponents – would be breaking the law if they attempted to march in the city centre on Saturday. She agreed to the ban after a request by Leicester City Council and Leicestershire police, who fear public order will be threatened.
However, in a statement, the group said it would press ahead with the march and was withdrawing from the talks. It also said it would not provide stewards for the protest. In a statement, the EDL leadership claimed extremist Muslim groups had been allowed to march in other parts of the country. It also claimed police plans to contain the groups inside cordons – known as kettling – would lead to frustration among its supporters. It said: "It's been very clear in past demos that 'kettling' and 'caging' our members leads to frustration, and we believe this is a deliberate tactic used by certain police forces to antagonise a reaction from our members.
"The English Defence League will be coming to Leicester and we will have our march."
