My House Just Shook (Chicago, Illinois): Earthquake?

Anybody here live in the Midwestern US? I live in Chicago and I just felt my bed shake, both my parents also felt the mild rumble which lasted no more than 4 seconds. I tried searching on Google but it's obviously too early and got no results.

Contrary to popular belief, earthquakes are not uncommon in the Midwest which is home to the New Madrid seismic zone. I was totally unaware of this until we had a 5.4 earthquake in 2008.

Some experts believe there could even be a major quake in the Midwest at some point in the future.

Sorry, I know this doesn't pertain to Germanic culture in any way, just wondering if anybody else felt it

I didn't feel anything, I'm not far from Evansville & we were shaken out of bed by a 5.4 earthquake centered near Mt. Carmel, Illinois 2 1/2 years ago.

According to Google News there was some quarry blasting last week that was mistaken for a mild earthquake in the Chicago suburbs. Though I doubt anyone would be working at a quarry on Sunday, Labor Day Weekend.

Hmm I know there was a 2.7 on the 31st that was possibly a quarry blast although it could have been an earthquake according to the USGS...so it definitely could be one...the only way to be sure is to wait though...

I was in Evansville for that earthquake 2 years ago...funny thing is, I had moved there from Washington thinking I was getting away from earthquakes lol I thought it was funny how everyone was freaking out from that little quake...well little to me, since we have larger ones often enough in the Seattle area...

    New Madrid Quake Zone

Hey! Welcome to Illinois. These small tremors occur on a regular basis. There was a new fault zone recently discovered in Northwestern Illinois that might be the cause of the shaking. This zone hasn't let loose in over something like 10,000 years, but has been becoming active as of late. If this zone and the New Madrid fault really lets loose, the Midwest could easily become a pile of rubble and the Mississippi River will probably change course. Or it could be that their working on new portions of the "Deep Tunnel" Project (when completed it will be the World's largest sanitary sewer project to control Urban Storm Runoff), but I haven't heard of any Project work going on on this project as of late.

So it's probably the Western Illinois fault just breaking loose again. If it's this, you'll feel small tremors in the Western Suburbs. Welcome to Illinois...
