Yes, BBC Was Biased: Director General Mark Thompson Admits a 'Massive' Lean to Left

BBC Director General Mark Thompson has admitted the corporation was guilty of a 'massive' Left-wing bias in the past.

The TV chief also admitted there had been a 'struggle' to achieve impartiality and that staff were ' mystified' by the early years of Margaret Thatcher's government.
    ...
The BBC has long been accused of being institutionally biased towards the Left, and an internal report from 2007 said it had to make greater efforts to avoid liberal bias.

That report criticised the BBC for coming late to several important stories including euroscepticism and immigration, which it described as 'off limits in terms of a liberal-minded comfort zone'.

Speaking of the time when he joined the BBC, Mr Thompson told the magazine: 'In the BBC I joined 30 years ago [as a production trainee, in 1979] there was, in much of current affairs, in terms of people's personal politics, which were quite vocal, a massive bias to the Left.

'The organisation did struggle then with impartiality. And journalistically, staff were quite mystified by the early years of Thatcher.

Ugh the BBC is horribly unbalanced. I like watching QI from time to time, but on one episode they tried to make Eurosceptics out to be a bunch foolish cranks and there was no opposition it. So its not just the news in which they are biased, every programme is biased.

Thanks for stating the obvious Mark Thompson

Yes, QI is quite notorious for things like that, I find, as most comedy shows are. I remember a particular episode in which they discussed the evolution of language and the growth of that stupid 'Multicultural London English' thingey - they emphasised that an opposition to this flow of time is futile, closed-minded, non-progressive, head-in-the-clouds yaddayaddayadda, as though a metropolitan globalised borderless socialist multi-'cultural' utopia is not head in the clouds if things are changing and you don't like what it is they're changing to, whether stopping that change is possible or impossible, what on earth is wrong with trying?

God that is awful, I'm glad I didn't see that episode I'd be liable to put my foot through the screen. This aswell coming from Stephen Fry who calls himself an intellectual. What man can call himself an intellectual and think its a good idea to let a beautiful language descend to the levels of caveman like grunting. And at the same time this fat bloated hypocrite talks about how it is important to preserve other cultures. Our culture apparently doesn't afford that right though, we must accept globalisation, resistance is futile

A version of Firefox I used had a BBC news feed. At first, it seemed very ideal. It did a lot of international stories and didn't focus as much on celebrity gossip as American news sources. It got worse and worse over time. If I might list some grievances:

    1) Using the term "youth" as a euphemism for a 12-40 year old minority criminal(American news sources do this too).

    2) Referring to non-Britons as "British". Would I become Congolese if I moved to the Congo?

    3) Repeatedly running the same humanitarian stories over and over and over. How many dozen times have they reported on Africans trying to cross the Meditarranean on canoes, anyways? Four before I stopped reading.

They always do that, and that is always the argument I use in return.

I've come into arguments that follow a similar line through out my time in university, too. Discussions beginning with "these Britons..." showing the image of a bunch of Asian folk, to which I reply "They're not Britons" of course provoking the response "they're no less British than you are!" being a smartarse I can't help but emphasise that by the 11th century the Britons had fragmented and split into the Welsh, Cornish, Bretons and people of Hen Ogledd, as such the closest thing to a Briton you'll find today is a Welsh person, of which you are not refering to as you're not even so much as refering to a bloody proper British person! they then start getting into ethnicity and how British is not an ethnicity, to which I would agree with on a multitude of levels, but of course that is not nearly enough and they start with the English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish are not ethnicities argument and I begin wanting to put my boot through someone's face.

An all inclusive identity loses all worth as an identity!

What else would you expect from a fat gay Jew with bipolar disorder working for the BBC?
