Have You Ever Planted a Tree?

Have you ever planted a tree? I know this is a weird question, but I think it's important that each of us plant a tree or a few in our life time. Trees make the world more beautiful.

I have thus far planted 8 trees, and I don't plan on stopping any time soon.

I have actually planted a few trees, both my parents are avid gardeners. My Father in particular has a great love for trees and I helped him plant many a tree on a piece of land he owns in the bushveld close to Loskop dam.

Since then I have planted a tree in every place that I have lived. I still love all plants but particularly trees and even more so Bonsai's, I started training Bonsai's about four years ago and I absolutely love it...

Though these days I don’t buy trees, I propagate them from cuttings that I find having a desirable shape suited to Bonsai training.

I remember a thread claiming that east Asians have no creativity, well bonsai is a mixture of art and an understanding of nature including ingenuity to cheat natures natural ways which IMO show quite the opposite, much like the engineering work of art known as the Katana...

Would practicing Bonsai be considered an un-Germanic activity?

I have planted thousands and thousands of trees. Before I was a blacksmith I was a horticulturalist specializing in nursery production.

Planting trees is fun work, I like it when I see a tree that I grew from a seed or cutting that is getting close to twenty years old. The sight of it is very rewarding.

Would practicing Bonsai be considered an un-Germanic activity?

To me it is no more un-Germanic then eating a pizza, which I know many of us do.

And, I have planted many varieties of trees, in many places. But, I have had much more time, than most folks here. I like to plant them from time to time.
I'm already thinking of some Elderberry bushes for next Spring, for the Wildlife.
Last year we planted 2 Pin Oaks, but one died. I think I'll probably replace it, in Spring.

I too have plenty of time for these things, this year alone I planted 5 oaks in my back yard, pretty soon (before the roots get too big) I'm going to move them to the front of the house. I see a lot of people cutting down perfectly healthy trees in my neighborhood, and I just feel compelled to replace them any way I can.

When I was a young lad, in primary school, I must have been about 9, my class planted an oak in the field next to our playground and ten feet to the north we buried a small wooden box filled with poems we had written about the oak tree. I'm not sure what subject this was for, however, with the writing of poetry I would assume English Literature.

I haven't planted a tree since, although I have always wanted to and I probably should. I always wonder why people don't get together in large groups, head to the fields and plant a ton of trees.

I have planted a few trees in my time, mostly around my grandfathers property.

I haven't. I'd like to plant some peach, and maybe an plle tree or two.

Mostly, I say I grow trees. I let the nuts or cones fall to the earth, and if they start growing, I nurture them from there. I prefer the random spacing that nature gives them, more of a wilderness setting, ya know?

Since I've moved here, I've got a maple, 3 birch and 6 pine trees growing, ranging from two to 18 feet tall.

I also let the saw palmetto grow wild on the borders, and some in my yard -- sort of like a natural curtain wall, and privacy walls inside the yard. Inside of those, I've nurtured naturally growing black and rasp berry bushes. They give my favorite fruit, and act as natural barbed wire to protect the yard.

This takes me back to my grade school days, our 7th grade class did this too, we planted a few elm trees to celebrate earth day but when I went back to visit the place where the trees were planted, 12 years later, I saw that they were no longer there

It's pretty cool driving past the house I grew up in and seeing this 16+ foot tall tree that I planted as a little boy.
