    Odinist or No?

Im really new to the whole folk thing and I dont want to get too into it if I fall into the "Mud" category. My question is pretty simple, can I be an Odinist, wotanist, asatru...etc...?

I know there is a ethnic factor and Im alright with that. Id be support it in either way.

Alright so on my mothers side its all German in every possible sense, even sub groups that were just German anyway. On my fathers side Ive got the full mutt effect; German, Irish, Scandinavian, but most importantly; Italian.

My grandfather originates from Calabria in southern Italy. My close family include a blonde mother, sister and two brothers. I on the other hand look like my father. We both have dark brown hair and brown eyes but extra pale skin that burns in the sun like you wouldn't believe. As my mother puts it; "You dont tan, you burn."

    So whats my status?

Odinism is intrinsically linked to ancestor worship. It is something that is unique to the blood of a certain people. If your family originate from a group that Odinism occurs in then you will find it rewarding. Even if you aren't connected to that ancestory you may still get something out of it, but the archetypes wont resonate as much within you.

What sort of culture were your family brought up with? What sort of culture do you most identify with and how does it relate to you?

Well, some heathen theologians would say that it does matter how nordic one is and claim that only the light haired blue eyed folk will enter Valhalla....

To expect a god to be accepting of anyone does seem a tad judeo-christian.

Thats sounds a bit more like Wotanism to me, why should a lack of melanin be a factor in being an Odinist? I have blue eyes and was born with blonde hair but don't see myself as any more "worthy".

I thought Odinism was just a label that we have now for our ancestors beliefs anyway and we don't even know the original term that they used. In any case I think its Germanic heritage thats important, Germanic gods only vary slightly between countries.

If you have a significant ammount of Italian blood perhaps you would feel more comfortable with Greek and Roman Paganism, but I don't know. Does anyone actually practise the old Greek and Roman polytheism, out of curiosity?

Yeah, probably right there. It's an interesting strain of heathenry though.

Like I said, the more submerged into a culture you are the more you will appreciate the archetypes. Even a Japanese person can get something out of the eddas, just as Europeans seem to get something out of the Bible or Qu'ran.

It depends how substantial the Italian contribution to your ancestry is. All I would advise, and all anyone should advise, is for you to follow whatever it is you truly believe. Immerse yourself in Germanic culture and tradition, myths and folklore, become familiar with it, but do so also with Latin traditions if you feel such an endevour to be important to yourself. Don't subscribe to a pathway as though it's a club, rather, carve your own with the tools and the material passed down to you from past generations.
