What I think sets the American education system apart its it enormous disparities - the wealthy schools are excellent, probably better than most of what one could find in Europe, but the poor schools are awful, with sometimes the majority of the students dropping out. The more poor and dangerous the area, the worse the schools are. I personally don't feel like my education has been inadequate so far. I go to a decent high school where they use computers and whatnot, the teachers are motivated and well-paid, and they've toned down the pro-American/"America is the best/only important country in the world" propaganda that I got in elementary school.

I went to a private school, a Lutheran school, for middle school, and I liked most of the teachers (though some were hideously close-minded and we had math and science teachers who didn't believe in evolution); however, the students were a nasty bunch. Not undereducated - just overprivileged and cruel to the point of ignorance.

So your saying that America is not the most powerful or most technologically advanced or the richest country on Earth with the most powerful military force in history?

    Thats what your saying?

If not America then what country is? I'm interested to know.

According to the "Human Development Index", Norway wins.

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education and standards of living for countries worldwide. It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare. It is used to distinguish whether the country is a developed, a developing or an under-developed country, and also to measure the impact of economic policies on quality of life.

    1 Norway 0.943
    2 Australia 0.929
    3 Netherlands 0.910
    4 United States 0.910

America's state debt is relatively viewed as high as Portugal's, both countries need to invest ~93% of their GPD for interest service (new data for 2011 even says 102% for the US, so you must pay more than what you have).

The war in Afghanistan alone costed until 2011 5.4 Trillion Dollars, and there have been/are other wars, Kuweit, Iraq etc, in addition the costs to maintain like 800 military bases around the world, and all the other smaller adventures abroad. America might currently be the "most powerful state", but there are others just waiting to take over. China is a good candidate, India too. Certainly if they get serious with the BRIC project.

There might soon be a lesson in humility for America, the hard way.

But nothing of this has much to do with education standards. In the PISA study Finland wins continually, while the US ranks 15 (in 2000) and 21 (in 2006), so the standard is actually falling, while Germany f.e. managed to climb up from 21 to rank 8.

Of course you could still chose to bomb the rest of the world back into stone age, but this wouldnt change the falling standards in your country either.

Our education system has evolved, that is all. In the area of practical knowledge, the U.S. has always been at the forefront of industrial education and now the schools are following Europes lead incorporating ethical and social standardization into their curriculum. What was valuable in terms of education 20 years aso has become irrelevant in many ways. The information age makes memorization of facts redundant, maybe even redundqnt.

As far as the topic goes, the empirical evidence suggests otherwise but many are certain to resort to their usual assortment of bigoted arguments and examples to the contrary and of course it is just as easy for us to do so. But really, where does that get us? Let our actions and accomplishments speak for us and it matters not what others think.

Also, it is ironic that a moderator would chastise some one about the proper use of punctuation marks with vulgarity.

I believe Velvet summed it up quite nicely.

Let us hope that civilisation does not collapse and take the infrastructure of the information age, ie the internet, with it.

    This is getting silly.

Yes, America is a nice place but to say we are the best is foolish. We might have been the best in the past but not anymore. We are turning into a third world country, slowly but surely.

Europe tends to have it together compared to the U.S, other than it's immigration problem and the European Union fiasco, Europe is doing ok.

Yes, we definately are. And that is exactly where all this animosity comes from. Jealousy. We were so far ahead at one point, that they're still trying to catch up after 100 years. Norway is beautiful, but it's headed for disaster. You say we're a third world country? 40% of Europe is Islam. Whites are still the majority here. For now ....

Yes, because if the internet does collapse then how would all these arm-chair activists get their work done?

Having seen and experienced education with both US & UK I'd have to say it's completely random and differs largely between individuals.

However like a lot of people I know had an assumption that the English were very intelligent. But I was totally shocked to find the difference in education with people around my age compared to those back home. Problem is that while these individuals might have had a lack of education compared to where I come from it's not to say 40 miles away at another area the people have the same issue, and could have a better education then myself and friends.

It's pretty hard to pin point and say they are dumb and they are smart. It's mixed, but it's mixed to the point that Europeans don't have any foot to stand on to say they have a far more superior education. I have met a lot of idiots in the states, and a lot of idiots over here.

Maybe parents should become a little more involved with their children and fill in the gaaps of the teachers. It might not be "their responsibility" to teach their kids because that's why they go to school, but it's your kid at the end of the day. I push and challenge mine and will continue to do so, it's for her future and benefit that I take the time to do so.
