Young Will Have to Change Names to Escape Cyber Past Warns Googles Eric Schmidt

Young will have to change names to escape cyber past warns Googles Eric Schmidt

    Posted on 18 August 2010

The private lives of young people are now so well documented on the internet that many will have to change their names on reaching adulthood, Googles CEO has claimed.

Eric Schmidt suggested that young people should be entitled to change their identity to escape their misspent youth, which is now recorded in excruciating detail on social networking sites such as Facebook.

I dont believe society understands what happens when everything is available, knowable and recorded by everyone all the time, Mr Schmidt told the Wall Street Journal.

Earlier this year, Google was condemned by the privacy watchdogs of 10 countries for showing a disappointing disregard for safeguarding private information of its users.

This only encourages irresponsibility. I understand some people make mistakes with what they do online, but the answer is not to sweep it under the rug. It happened, and they need to get on with their lives. This way the next generation will be able to learn from such mistakes as well.

In a way, he's right. Spokeo and Pipl archive any information they can get on you and Tineye lets people track where images on the internet came from. Facebook started this horrible trend of websites encouraging people to use their real names online(tantamount to heresy when I was learning about the internet some years ago) Facebook won't even delete your info if you delete your page. The internet is a much less private place than it once was and many people are putting way too much information on themselves online.

Use a nickname on Facebook and -screen names- elsewhere. Detag any photos of yourself you wouldn't want potential employees seeing.

I work with one Indian idiot who when he calls sick he then puts it on facebook - "Got rerally drunk, hungover, called in sick *LMAO*"

    They have no clue.
I grew up on a belief of honour, courage and the old world values. The world isn't about that anymore, preferring to die a slow death of fast food and cheap thrills.
