Mad 8 Percent of U.S. Newborns Have Undocumented Parents

One of about every 12 babies born in the United States in 2008 was the offspring of unauthorized immigrants, a Pew Hispanic Center study released Wednesday concluded.

According to the study, an estimated 340,000 of the 4.3 million babies born in this country that year had parents who were in the United States without legal documentation.

The 14th Amendment to the Constitution stipulates that those children automatically become U.S. citizens, but some members of Congress are pushing to change that provision. That effort -- rooted in the debate over illegal immigration, particularly of people from Mexico -- has created some controversy.

That definitely needs to change as i believe certain European countries have done in similar situations - dealing with cases of people going to such countries with the sole purpose of having a birth there to gain some entitlement for residence.

I thought the percentage would've been higher. Then again statistics are always skewed. The southern states bordering mexico are becoming over run by these third world immigrants and will soon be lost. Texas & New Mexico need to unite with Arizona or at the very least have a militia watch over the border.

Illegal Immigrants Account for 8% of U.S. Newborns, Study Shows

Illegal Immigrants Account for 8% of U.S. Newborns, Study Shows

    Posted on 18 August 2010

As many as 340,000 of the 4.3 million babies born in the U.S. in 2008 had at least one parent who was an illegal immigrant, according to a Pew Hispanic Center study of Census Bureau data.

Unauthorized immigrants, who make up a little more than 4 percent of the population, are for the most part young and have high birth rates, according to the Pew study. Their children make up 8 percent of the newborn population and 7 percent of those under 18.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, is leading an effort to change the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees U.S. citizenship to anyone born in the country.

“We just can’t have people swimming across the river having children here,” he told Fox News.
