    Origins of Norse Art Style

I was recently on a sort of farmers' market and walked into the booth of a woman who was making all kinds of images and patterns on leather surfaces. I was most fascinated by the Norse styled ones, which mostly looked somewhat close in style to this:

...And she told me that this kind of art style was not native to the Norse people at all. They only imitated what they had seen in the Middle-East on their many trips they made down there, and took the art style back to Scandinavia where it was further developed.

I'm not taking this claim too seriously, as she said she only heard from a tour guide in Cairo or something, though that fact didn't seem to put much doubt in her mind. It certainly wouldn't be the first time some under-achieving people tried to shine up their own history by falsely claiming something from our own...

But if anyone know of any evidence that would prove this story a false one, it would make me sleep just a little bit better at night.

I've actually heard that claim myself, and it almost always comes from people too historically illiterate to understand that most Muslim motifs were lifted straight from the Persian Zoroastrians.

The Indo-Iranian peoples, being cultural relatives of the Indo-European peoples, had similar artistic styles and themes.

This should be a no brainer, all you have to do is look at artifacts before the Norse starting traveling down the Volga. You can clearly see how the art style developed over time. If I remember right it started out as geometric forms and progressed from there.

I think you can do a search and create a time line to prove that these styles started in Germanic lands.

Yes, you're right. I shouldn't even had dignified these rumoures by dedicating a thread to it.

"The Oseberg style is a Scandinavian animal style which is named after the Oseberg ship grave which also contained numerous richly decorated objects in wood.[1] The characteristic motif of the style is gripping beasts.[1] The style is also characterized by traditions from the Vendel era, and it is nowadays not generally accepted as an independent style."

The Vendel era is today considered to have started around the middle of the 6th century.

It is always good to dispell these false hoods, remember this forum is about Germanic Preservation.
