To the Scandinavians in Here, Please Help

I would like to know from the scandinavians in here if they have ever heard the surname Thobias; from what I have been told, my grand grandfather carried it, and everyone says it is a very swedish surname/name. Thanks in advance!

I'm not from Sweden myself, but I've never really seen Thobias (or Tobias, as it's usually written) used as anything else than a male first name. I've noticed quite a few Swedes carry the name, at least it's more frequent there than in Norway or Denmark.

Read here for more details about the name.

! I thought Tobias was of German origin. Hence the German metal singer, Tobias Sammet.

It is not etymologically scandinavian but it is the ocurrence amongst swedes that I do no get... it is obviously a christened surname alright but I never see it not beared by non-swedes and this side of my family is very unexplored so.. anyway we need more opinions for this one.

Actually this spelling is mostly common with english people... Thobias with H in the middle is rare in almost any place that is not Sweden itself, this according to what I know...

Tobias is a normal name here in Norway

Wouldn't be pronounced any differently here, as we do not have the sound of Ž in the Norwegian language, so everyone just writes Tobias as far as I've seen.

I'd guess that it's like Thomas/Tomas; here you spell it with a h just as often as without.
