Genetic studies indicate there is not much difference between the Scots, Welsh and English. I believe they are a mix of Celtic and Germanic, with a touch of Roman blood. Additionally, there were the original Picts, I believe, and some even more ancient people before that.

I myself have mostly English blood, plus Dutch. I consider myself a Celtic/Germanic mix.

Well geneticaly the celts and germanics both fall under the North-West European division of genetics, so their DNA is simaler but can be distiguished, a shocking note is that we are closer to the Arabs and North Africans geneticaly than we are to the Fins or Greeks

Intereresting. Could you link to a scientific source for this?

I'm not so shocked about the Finns, but I find it a bit odd that we are closer related to Arabs than Greeks when the today's Greeks have a considerable amount of Arab ancestry.

Large federal states aren't traditionally Germanic. Remember that ancient Germanics threw out, and killed tribal leaders who tried to be authoritarian, and tribal lines were well split. Small, community-minded tribes are what Germanics are made for.

    Do you mean racially genetically?

Keep in mind, there's no clear-cut division in Britain between racial types. With that in mind, South England, Western England, Western Scotland, and Highlands Scotland tend to be more "Mediterranean", darker hair, softer features. East England, North England, and South and Eastern Scotland are more "Nordic"/Germanic.

I was under the impression that Celts originated from the
Hallstatt, Austria area then moved north to the UK.
That would perhaps explain the genetic similarities.

    Perplexed

After reading WestPrussian's 'Who is Germanic' thread I am
quite confused. I know so little about genetics that I don't
know what to believe other than I need to do some studying.

I agree that it depends on where in Britain you are talking about. The area where I come from, Yorkshire, and much of the Northern part of England seems very Germanic, as do many rural areas that have not had their identity destroyed. In my village there are Germanic place names and clear archaeological evidence of strong Germanic culture, and the people mostly look Germanic. The cities are lot less Germanic, then again, large parts of them don't even look European any more...

According to British historian R. Grenfell 70% (1953) of the English people (but not the Scottish and Welsh) are Germanic, the majority of those Germanics are Anglo-Saxons, 2 German tribes that left Germany in the 6th and 7th century to establish the Saxon Kingdom on the British Island. In other words, the majority of the English are genetically Germans, but not culturally or by language. The other 30% of the English are mostly descendants of Romano-Britons and Celtic tribes.

The numbers today may be far lower, due to immigration and racial intermixing with immigrants.

Read an article recently on British DNA. Said that 6 out of 10 British males carry Frisian DNA. And also the Frisian language (old Frisian ) being the root language of English
I believe there were large numbers of Frisians in Britain before the Anglo-Saxon invasion of Britain and should have been called (and is by some scholars ) the. Anglo - Frisian invasion.

THERE ARE NO GEATS ONLY FRISIANS !!!
