Thumbs Up Twenty Babies in Britain Named Adolf

Twenty babies in Britain named Adolf

Twenty babies born in Britain since the Second World War have been named Adolf, official birth records show.

The most recent was registered in 2005 according to family tree website Findmypast.co.uk, which has records dating back to 1837.
Before the war there were 320 Adolfs registered in England and Wales, but the name became less popular in the years following the conflict.

It's a beautiful ancient Germanic name deriving from originally Adalwolf, meaning "noble wolf". I can't seem to find anything wrong with that forename.
-In kalte Schatten versunken...

(Heimdalls Wacht, In kalte Schatten versunken, stanzas 4-6)

Apart from the fact that it's German. The Old English cognate is Ćthelwulf.

You're telling this to a student of Linguistics, who has just come out of an exam in Old English less than three weeks ago and gained top marks with adding in lots of extra information the lecturer didn't even teach about.

Want me to dig out the whole 16 pages on Old English phonology or shall we just leave it at that?

Go for it. But first explain why so many English kings used it in their name - Aethelbald of Mercia, Aethelwulf of Wessex, Athelstan, Ethelred, etc.

I couldn't tell you, that's not a linguistic issue ... I would wager it might have something to do with asserting a type of prominence over the whole bunch of waelas, and since there were quite a few of them...

(My Ex, being partially Welsh, would slaughter me for that comment, I don't care. )
