Question The Basters of South Africa

While in South Africa a while ago, I read about a group of people called the Basters, who I was told were a hybrid of German settlers and local Khoikhoi and San tribes. I have not been able to find many resources, so I was wondering if any of our South African members or anyone who is more knowledgable could give more information about them.

Baster is a synonym for Bastard or half-cast, You won't find many resources because they are Generally viewed as Cape coloured along with the Boesman and the Malaysian component that make up the cape coloured mix.
Although the word "Commando" was wrongly used to describe all Boer soldiers, a commando was a unit formed from a particular district. None of the units was organized in regular companies, battalions or squadrons. The Boer commandos were individualists who were difficult to control, resented formal discipline or orders, and earned a British jibe that"every Boer was his own general".

Thanks, I thought that might be the case. A follow up question then, could anyone provide resources on the ancestry of the coloured groups of the cape. As I understand it, under apartheid, there were many different 'coloured' groups classified.

I don't know about classification's from the Apartheid, sorry cant help you there.

Here is a coloured Justin Ontong with apparent European ancestry:

Strange eyes for a coloured, their iris's are usually dark brown:

    Pieter de Villiers

Even though the sir name is Afrikaans from French he is not particularly European looking, there are many instances where coloured surnames are Afrikaans common words used as surnames like the coloured news reader Terrance April. There are many more instances like Malgas which is the Afrikaans name of a sea bird the cape gannet, it is more than likely that slaves took their owners surnames for official matters. Anyway there are two main types of coloured IMO, those of bushman origin and those of Malay decent. The coloureds in the relatively arid Northern Cape are bushman, in and around Cape town it is a mix of Bushman and Malay and to a far lesser degree than claimed European decent, where ever they made population centres after that like in Bloemfontein and Johannesburg it is usually a mixture similar to Cape town.

But don't take my word for it, I am no expert.

Thanks a lot for the info!

I have a friend whose father's family is from Westphalia, in Germany, but his mother's family was classified as coloured in South Africa because his great grandfather, a norweigan immigrant married a Baster woman. He looks like a normal german (or Nordid..I'm not skilled in racial classification) but his skin has a slight tan, which becomes noticable in the summer. He asked me how dominant these genes are (say he marries a fully germanic woman, would they be likely to be noticable in the next generation).

I haven't seen the movie Skin, but the trailers seem to have gotten me interested in the heritage of south african groups

What was the general reaction from the Afrikaaner community to the movie, by the way? It seems to make some claims which a lot of Afrikaaners probably wouldn't be happy with.
