So I Am Trying to Learn German and It's Hard =/

So I am beginning my quest to learn German and it is hard. Memorizing the runes, and some key Old Norse phrases was easy, but German seems a lot harder, perhaps its the Modern-ish appearance of the language that is making it hard for my memory to grasp, I do not know.

But I have begun my journey, and I will keep studying until success?

The easiest part of language learning for me is phonetics. I'm really good at mimicking sounds; in fact some Germans say I talk with an Austrian accent. It's word placement and my confusion on whether to use die, der, and das that gets me sometimes.

There's a great website that helps with language learning that utilizes memorization among other exercises to help you get comfortable, as well as allowing interaction with native speakers all over the world called livemocha.com. Check it out.

It´s hard to help you in a general way but if you have specific questions I´d help you as a native speaker. Translations, for example. Or corrections of your results.

Well, I´m always glad to hear if someone wants to learn our language! Keep going and good luck.

My own German is not that good, but I can give you one tip that will strongly improve your understanding of German when it is spoken. Watch a few times a week German television. This was something I had done when I was a little child. I usually woke up very early and then went to watch some TV, only thing interesting for a child my age then was on the German channels, Marvel cartoons in German.

German is a challenge when it comes to learning the language to a full level of proficiency. I can speak what is called 'Umgangssprache' slang language or street German but if you ask me to write it correctly it becomes extremely very difficult. For the most part I can also read it reasonably well but again writing it is something else.

Ever since early childhood my mother noticed my attraction to the language and once as a little kid in a supermarket I heard a couple speaking in German at the check out counter and I walked right up to them smiling and listening to them as if it were music to my ears. My mother had to gently take my hand and walk me back to her trolly nearby to the amusement of the German couple whom smiled kindly at me.

I was devastated in school when I was told German was not on the menu (so to speak) and once got in trouble in English class down the back reading a 'Teach yourself German' book of which the teacher caught me quite engrossed in it and slammed his fist on my desk causing me to almost fly off my seat.. He grabbed the book whacked me across the shoulders with the book then held it up to the class and shouted "In English class he's teaching himself German"!!! to the roaring laughter of the entire class who thought it hilarious at the time. Ever since that day I was baptised with the nickname 'Fritz' which I was quite happy to accept of course..

Regarding learning the basics there are some reasonably good German websites such as this one.
    http://www.deutsch-lernen.com/learn-...rs/summary.php

Even YouTube offers natives speaking short sentences with English translations..

German is a beautiful language and of course I would encourage everyone new to it to have a go at learning at least some of it : )

    Ich helfe dir!

Verstehen Sie mich? Mit nur deine Gedank?

Not sure how great that was but I'm asking if you can understand me without translate tools. I'm currently taking German courses. : )

Not bad for the beginning. Your first two sentences are right and written properly. But "Mit nur deine Gedank" makes no sense. You wanted to ask the others to try to understand your sentences with their brains only and not with dictionaries or other translation tools, am I right?

A proper idea would be: "Verstehen Sie mich? Ausschließlich mit Ihrem verfügbaren Wissen?"

"Gedank" is no existing word. The singular of "thought" is "Gedanke", the plural "Gedanken". You could also write "Nur mit deinen Gedanken?" but it doesn´t hit the nail of what you wanted to predicate. But it´s at least a correct sentence.

Yes, German is music to my ears too. I am also trying to learn this language. I have a few friends who can speak it and we keep correspondence. I think the best way to learn a language is practice, practice and more practice. I know I make a lot of mistakes but at least I can make myself understood pretty well.
Ich mache immer sehr viele grammatischen Fehler, aber ich kann mich ganz verständlich machen und das ist das wichtigste, meine Meinung nach.

I also have trouble with the der, die, and das. It is especially confusing when you have all of the different cases (Genitive, Nominative, Accusative, etc.). The only good way to memorize which of them to use is practice and repetition.

You are correct in stating that livemocha.com is a great place to learn German (Swedish, Icelandic, or many others also). I have been using that particular website for reinforcement and practice for quite a while now. I would suggest it to anyone trying to practice or learn a new language.
