Thumbs Up Island of HELGOLAND, Germany

Im wondering if any Skadi members have actually been to the island of Helgoland which looks like a fascinating place to say the least. I heard it was badly damaged at the end of WW2 when the Allies destroyed a large section of it and also that the Island had a maze of underground tunnels as part of its natural defences.

Surprising in this picture there are obvious signs of a very active thriving German Islander community and it obviously must be a tourist attraction.

Has anyone actually been there in person? If so what is it like there?

Bin irgendwie sehr neugierig davon ; )

Wow, that is an incredible picture. Were did you find it if you don't mind me asking?
I have been very interested in Helgoland for years, ever since I read
a book by Juergen Spanuth, a pastor/archaeologist who made a case
for Helgoland being the remnant of a much larger island which was the
capitol of an ancient maritime empire,i.e., " Atlantis".
I was staying with a friend of mine in Bremen and we were going out
to helgoland, but ,alas, we missed the ferry and I ran out of time.
But I am going back in a couple of months and it is at the top of my list.

Strangley enough there is a Skadi post from about 2004 about Helgoland.

The inhabitants of Heligoland are ethnic Frisians, rather than Germans, and a Frisian dialect is still spoken there today. As has been mentioned above, the archaeologist Jurgen Spanuth has proposed it as a remnant of Atlantis. In this connection see also the Oera Linda Book - http://oeralinda.angelfire.com - which mentions a sunken landmass in the North Sea called Atland, the original home of the Frisians (and, it seems, all the Germanic peoples). It was said to have been submerged in 2194 BC.

From Wikipedia: Heligoland is now a holiday resort and enjoys a tax-exempt status, as it is part of the EU but excluded from the EU VAT area and customs union, and consequently, much of the economy is founded on sales of cigarettes, alcoholic beverages and perfumes to tourists who visit the islands.

I'm thinking most of the food is brought in.

In the picture it reminds me of some sort of futuristic space station/colony. Except surrounded by water.

    Fascinating looking place!
Close observation may result in feelings of horror, wonder and awe at world you find yourself inhabiting.

I want to visit Helgoland one day, but it´s far far north from where I live, here in Southern Germany. Most probably the most interesting island of all German islands.

Have you noticed that there aren´t any trees on Helgoland? The red cliffs are impressive. The most famous cliff is the "Lange Anna", a free-standing rock at the uninhabitated side of Helgoland. "Lange Anna" is threatened by water waves so people built a wall around the rock to preserve it.

For an island of such small size it´s quite imposing that the highest point of Helgoland is 61,3 meters above sea level. By way of comparison, 99% of the Netherlands are below 60 meters.
