Bede tells us that all the Angles migrated to Britain, and that in his day (c. 700) their homeland in Europe was still empty of people. Whether this is literally correct is another matter, but clearly the tradition he is recounting is based on something. Whilst some individuals presumably stayed behind, the Angles as a nation didn't, and an Angle ethnicity did not remain in Europe. This was not true of the Saxons, of course.
