    Ancestry.com

I discovered my interest in genealogy during an assignment and since then, I've wanted to continue further. I have looked into ancestry.com and other similar sites, but I question their usefulness (and in some cases, their legitimacy).

So have you paid for ancestry.com's services? How helpful were they? What sort of documents, perks, and benefits do they provide with a paid subscription?

I have had a paid subscription with them for several years now and believe it is money well spent. The sheer volume of info available is phenomenal. Their search engine is easy to use and the tools to refine searches are intuitive.

I have found thousands of ancestors, some direct some 3rd, 4th, 5th type cousins, pictures of people, headstones, stories of peoples lives, wills, family bibles etc, etc, etc.

Just double check everything you copy as being the right ancestor.........it's amazing how many times I have come across a person with the right name and year and location of birth and then found out they were another person altogether.

Bottom line: You wont be disappointed, go for it.

Thank you for your feedback; I hope you don't mind answering several more questions I have.
    1) Which subscription "packet" is worth purchasing? I think there's an international or USA-restricted option. There's also 1-year plans, 2-year plans, etc. - Which one would be best?
    2) What am I paying for exactly? Scanned/digitalized documents?
    3) How do they provide pictures of people? Do those pictures have to be provided by another subscriber of ancestry.com?

    Thanks again.

    Answers:

    1. Go International. If you find a line back then the most it can go backwards in the US is the 1600's and you will want to follow it as far as you can.

    2. Scanned/digitalized documents. You can however order certified copies of the origionals but my view is whats the difference between scanned/digitalized and copies?

    3. If you are a member of the site, any scanned photo that is open for public view (by far the majority) is there to copy & paste to your records.

NB: Some members have their info made "private" but there are hot links to email these people and ask them for specific info. People (including me) do this because many people just copy & paste and offer nothing new. If you think you are related (connected in some way) these people generally share with you without hesitation.

    Happy to answer anything else.

Yes it is, also remember that you can sign up for just a month (slightly more expensive than a 12 month sub divided by 12).
