    I'm the Captain of a merchant sailing ship--a freighter to be percise, and contrary to some retarded assumptions made before on this website, I am not in the Royal Navy. A merchant seafarer is not a member of the Queens armed forces.

    Cool Re: Unskilled Dead-end Jobs

    I once spoke with a guy who worked in a blast furnace at a steel mill. He told me he shoveled loose coal onto a conveyer belt all bloody day long. Mind you, he said the pay was OK, but the work was insufferably dull and back breaking. I got the impression he wouldn't have recomended anyone to make any career changes.

    What about demolition work? Of course, I haven't done it myself but I know plenty of men who did this type of work, some family members and friends. They would come home in the evenings covered in dust and dirt, some of which was quite toxic and they had to leave the clothes bags outside or thrown away. They also came back covered in blood and there are many accidents on these demolition sites. They also risk their lives doing this work. A dangerous, evil job but according to some who've worked there for a long time it's quite interesting and easily missed.
    (It doesn't matter how old the song is, I won't stop liking it).

    Lightbulb Re: Unskilled Dead-end Jobs

    The worst job I ever had was that of a drill press operator in an automobile parts manufacturing company. The pay wasn't bad, but it was far from great either. I figured in today's money it would equal about 16,000 British pounds or 30,000 in US dollars. Mind you, that ain't chicken feed friends, but I don't see how you can raise a family on it either.

    Anyway, the job was horrible! It nearly drove me barmy! I did virtually the same thing over and over and over and over again, every single bleedin' day. It was so boring (pardon the pun) that I think you had to be either high on dope or have an IQ of 85 or lower in order to cope. The factory was old, drafty, and always so needlessly very dirty. At the end of the day it took almost an entire bar of soap to wash all the grease, oil, dirt and metal slivers off your face and hands. The place was loud as hell, so much so that you had to wear ear muffs along with the safety glasses, steel tipped work boots and cumbersome hard hat they forced you to purchase out of your first pay packet

    It seemed everybody who worked there hated each other as much as they hated themselves for letting themselves wind up becoming such losers in life. The place was so bloody humiliating that they actually made you raise your hand and ask permission to go to the lavoratory. Fucking hell, I thought this was the bloody 21st century! I can see why now autoworkers had those huge labour strikes in Flint and Detroit back in the 1930's. The placewas like a slave plantation. You had to punch a time clock in and out, and heaven help you if you were late. They searched your packages and patted you down as you punched out of the place at quitting time. They even installed cctv's in the loo to catch people goldbricking or smoking.

    Notonlywas the job so mind-numbing monotnous and grimey, but it was dangerous too. If you weren't concentrating you could lose a finger or a hand real quick. That job stymied any creativity or curiosity you might have in life. You were forced to become a drone, a mindless, souless robot. Thank God I made it out of there!

    Yuck! Soft drinks! No breweries around?
    And all my youth passed by sad-hearted,
    the joy of Spring was never mine;
    Autumn blows through me dread of parting,
    and my heart dreams and longs to die.

    - Nikolaus Lenau (1802-1850)

    Real misanthropes are not found in solitude, but in the world; since it is experience of life, and not philosophy, which produces real hatred of mankind.
