    Classify My Maternal Grandfather

I only have this picture of him young (circa 1961, born 1937).

I also apologize for the prescription sunglasses, his eyes are extremely sensitive to sunlight (and grey-green).

Surname Hale. Family got here from England in the early 1700's.

Makes it difficult with the glasses on. However, I will share with you an educated guess. From what I see, the head is elongated, nose appears to be somewhat long, midface seems of great length, based on these elements, it appears that he is approaching a Dinaroid look. He is probably Noric. Keltic Nordic is also possible.

However, it is quite hard to accurately classify the individual based on that picture alone. A side profile would have been helpful for a more accurate assessment because it would help get a rough idea of the cranial index based on shape (Dinarids and Norids usually are quite short headed, greater length would approach Keltic Nordic), as well as the occiput (which would typically appear flattened in the case of Dinaroids or Norids), shape of nose, and slope of forehead.

Also keep in mind that I do not claim to be an expert on this subject. My analysis was strictly an educated guess with these two sites as the primary sources of information.

Thank you for your opinions. I will have to go back to the farm (which is always fun anyway) and get poppa and granny to get out the photo album and find more pictures of him in his youth. I have lots of him now that he is in his 70s, but I understand classification is easier when the subject is younger.

He's about 5-10 inches tall, and always was very physically strong. His hands are enormous. Hard farm work and good genetics I suppose.

Here's a profile picture of him with me at the lakehouse, I believe he's about 45 at this point. Everyone we can trace in his ancestry came to Virginia in the early 1700's. All English surnames. I wonder if his look is typical in certain parts of England? I promise Ill get better pictures as soon as I can. Thanks again!
