Thumbs Up Arizona Law Threatens Ethnic Studies Courses Tailored to Immigrants' Children

A new Arizona law banning the teaching of lessons that "promote overthrowing the US government", aimed at heavily Hispanic school districts, has reignited the controversy over race and the state's hardline anti-immigration stance.

It comes a month after the state's Republican-dominated legislature passed laws requiring police to demand ID from anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant. The latest law seeks to penalise schools that offer ethnic studies courses. The move is directed at schools in the city of Tucson, which offer courses tailored to the children of Mexican immigrants.

Aside from banning the teaching of the overthrow of the US government, the new law prohibits any courses that "promote resentment toward a race or class of people; are designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group; advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals".

The bill was championed by Tom Horne, Arizona's superintendent of schools, who is to run as a Republican in upcoming elections for Arizona's attorney general. Previously, he banned bilingual education from government schools.

Although he has never attended any of the ethnic studies classes, Horne told the New York Times: "The most offensive thing to me, fundamentally, is dividing kids by race." Referring to La Raza, or "the race", a Spanish term sometimes used to refer to ethnic Mexicans, Horne said: "They are teaching a radical ideology in Raza, including that Arizona and other states were stolen from Mexico and should be given back."

The leaders of the Tucson school district, where most students are Hispanic, say the ethnic studies courses on offer do not violate the law and would be continued because they were valuable to students. Tucson's schools offer optional courses in Mexican American, African American, native American and Asian studies, taken by just 3% of students. The new law exempts native American studies from the ban.

In its defence, the Tucson school district says the ethnic studies courses have reduced dropout rates and increased the number of Hispanic students completing high school education to above the national average.

Sean Arce, director of Tucson's Mexican-American studies department, said the contentious courses taught students about the marginalisation of different groups in US history. "They don't teach resentment or hostility in any way, shape or form," he told the New York Times. "They build cultural bridges of understanding and teach the skills students need to understand history."

Although Horne has conducted a running battle against the Tucson schools and ethnic studies course for a decade, the state's toxic political climate has finally allowed his cause to become law. Horne is locked in a tough election for the Republican nomination to be attorney general. His opponent is running on a platform of even tougher anti-immigration measures.

That is a bloody lie. I don't know why I am still so shocked and amazed by the

lefties' propensity for blatant lying. You would think I would be used to it by now.

I used to think it was some kind of characterlogical defect, like an adult version of

childhood wishful, magical thinking. But their continual lying in the face of all the

terrible things happening to our people, has convinced me that they are just evil,

nasty people who thrive on the chaos and pain that they are inflicting on us and

    our children.

Yes, my reading of these people is a bit of both. Magical thinking and hateful spite. They are two sides stemming from the same psychological issues for multicult liberals.

If whites had ethnic studies the world would cry racism. The fact is Mexican immigrant ethnic studies are only a problem when white Americans think the whole world is just one beautiful melting pot. The Liberals will see there own demise in their counter productive illusion of a poly glot post racial world.

    Thumbs Down

Es nada menos que la "'Reconquista de 'Aztlan'" por los mestizos.
Translated: It's nothing less than the Reconquest of "Aztlan" by the mestizoes through invasion and colonization, aided and abetted by the Mexican regime. That's the goal of mestizo racist groups like "La Raza" and "Mecha". Any American government officials that collaborate with them are committing treason.
It's utter insanity when American students in California are penalized for wearing shirts depicting the U.S. flag on a foreign holiday:

    http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/2010/05/06/2010-05-06_california_kids_blasted_for_wearing_a merican_flag_shirts_on_cinco_de_mayo.htm l

A handful of California students got an unexpected lesson at their high school this week: Don't wear your stars and stripes on Cinco de Mayo.
Five Morgan Hill, California students were asked to take off their American flag bandannas and turn their T-shirts inside out after students complained, according to NBC news in San Francisco.
Many members of Live Oak High School's large Mexican-American student population that felt it was offensive for the students to wear the American flag on a day that's supposed to celebrate Mexican heritage.
Pardon the language, but f--- the mestizoes if they don't like the display of American symbols in America. They want to celebrate Mexican holidays? Go the ---- back to Mexico.
The Mexicans' racism and celebration of their foreign culture, waving the foreign Mexican flag in beligerant demonstrations on American soil, gets a free pass and pat on the head by anti-American political correctness, but native-born kids simply wearing symbols of their own country are discriminated against.
Totally reprehensible and insane. No compromise with Marxist 'political correctness".
Kudos to the Arizona government for trying to protect Arizonans from the foreign invasion where the federals refuse to do their duty.

That is great! See what a bit of pride and interest in ones heritage can achieve?

This is disgusting. I'm sure this is yet another conravention of the UN right to self determination. Surely it is a peoples right to oveerthrow a government if they feel it does not serve their interests?

The second part of this is carefully worded as "any courses that promote resentment..." Well, that could mean simply teaching facts in an objective manner. Besides, if sombod harbours "resentment" toward a race or class of people then tat is of course their right.

This is very bad news for people who love freedom.....
