Lightbulb Anybody Fancy a Big Mac?

I was just wondering what peoples ideas are about MacDonalds.

Do you think that it is a good buisiness, seeing as how it is a franchise and provids our people with a lot of work - especialy "underskilled" people like me (I do not work there btw)?

Or do you see it as a giant international corporation that stifles independent business?

I'm sure there are other issues such as how the corporation treats animals, the environment ect - as well as the actual food.

It's usually a love or hate thing with MacDonalds, so this should be a good little thread. The same could also apply for Wal-Mart/ASDA, Tesco and other large corporations.

Personaly, I think that they do provide jobs, but that they also have a negative impact on independant business an dculture in general.

Yes, they do provide jobs for young people and it's a good way to start a job career. BUT, in the past, there were much more opporutnities to find jobs similar to McDonalds, from what I understand. I mean, nowadays you need a College degree to work in a storehouse (ok not really but you get my point). What I'm trying to say is that nowadays there are too few jobs for people without expereince to be able to start their job careers, and I actually think that could be a reason alot of people lack work, they can't start a simple job to get a small pay and some expereince, McDonalds being one of few exceptions. So I would suggest for future politicans to create "simple jobs" that young people without education and experience can start.

And about the others, I think places like McDonalds should work to improve the "healthiness" of what they sell, this has been done to some degree when they sell carrots instead of chips/french fries. I also think nations should work to create their own "McDonalds", so that not only one or two companies rule the world.

Someone must be braindead to work at mcdonalds, for no price would i ever work there.

McDonald's eating up the Amazon Rainforest

Meanwhile, the Xingu basin in the pristine heart of the forest is being turned into the regional waste drain, says the report.

Home to 14 indigenous tribes, it is changing fast, says Ionaluka, a director of the Xingu Indigenous Land Association. "Every time I leave the reserve I do not recognise anything because the forest keeps disappearing," he says.

    Anybody Fancy a Big Mac?

I don't partake of their food other than the fries. And what goes for a hamburger there gives me a stomach ache. The fish sandwich is margainally better. The shakes are pedestrian, as is, in fact, most of the food there.

Hey me too! I stopped eating fast food for good after I got sick from it.

Fast food places don't care about their customers or their food, only their profit.

Like I said three hours ago McDonald's food is not the greatest in the world.
It's very bad for you and and loaded with MSG's.
With that being said it does provide jobs for High School students,College Students and gives handicapped people a place to work instead of sucking tax
    payers dollars via Social Security.

What really angers me about McDonald's is they have a bad habit of hiring
illegal immigrants instead of the above mentioned persons.Since they like
breaking the law so much they can shove all that nasty food right up their
    keester's.

I don't eat in McDonalds because the food is terrible, absolutely terrible.

However for only slightly more money a trip to almost any fish and chip shop will provide a quick meal which is infinitely more appealing than anything you'll get from McDonalds.

In McDonalds favour they have always paid their staff better than average for the type of work done and looked after them better too. Where I used to live McDonalds would send a Mini-van around to collect and drop off their workers at the beginning and end of their shifts.Which I always thought was a nice touch.

I would say that for a young person who's goal in life is to become a restaurant manager or retail manager or even one day a restaurant owner, starting in McDonalds and working ones way up is a viable option. But a) they'd have to be prepared to work very hard and b) they would have to be able not to let McDonalds shadier business practices bother them.

Having said that, it is the job of governments to enforce ethical business practices within their own countries. Therefore the blame for the destruction of the Amazon rainforest cannot be laid solely at the feet of McDonalds or other business interests. It is the Brazilian government that is allowing the rainforests to be cleared in order to sell the wood to generate revenue. If the Brazilian Government decided that the logging should end then end it would, immediately. Whereas if McDonalds decides not to buy wood from Brazil some other company will buy it instead and the forest will still get cleared.
Close observation may result in feelings of horror, wonder and awe at world you find yourself inhabiting.

I actually have a love-hate relationship to McDonalds, so I consider it being rather a negative symbol for the multinational corporations and Americanism/Californication/Capitalism/junk food/worker's exploitation etc. than a real threat by itself, yet I eat fastfood at times - unfortunately...

It really depends on the alternative whether I consider it good or bad.

However for only slightly more money a trip to almost any fish and chip shop will provide a quick meal which is infinitely more appealing than anything you'll get from McDonalds.
I dont know too much about the typical Fish'n Chips shops, but it doesnt sound too tasty for me, whats the offer there? What dishes do they usually have?

Because sometimes I wonder about people bashing McDonalds but eating other fried stuff which is basically the same or even worse - sometimes at least.

    I used to boycott it.
