    Baby Battered in Robbery

A one-year-old girl is fighting for her life in a Joburg hospital after she sustained head injuries in a violent house robbery in Randburg.

She wasn't breathing when security company medics arrived at the child's home in Robin Hills yesterday afternoon, and there was blood pouring from her ears and nose.

"The baby was pap (weak)," said neighbour Olga Rossouw, who was first on the scene. "She just hung limply."

Rossouw, heard her neighbour screaming at about 1pm. The baby's mother had just arrived home from work and had found the little one unconscious and caregiver Francina Sekhu beaten and tied up after a group of men had broken into the house.

Two Mozambican citizens on Monday were charged with attempted murder and robbery with aggravated circumstances for the assault of one-year-old Marzaan Kruger and her minder Francina Sekhu.

Nelson Maphosa, 25, and Geraldt Nyantumbo, 28, appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court.

They were arrested in Alexandra on Saturday.

The Bantu nanny is to blame:

"I don't open the gate for just anybody. I only open for people I know. I didn't think twice about opening for Chakhoma because I knew him from the time he had done construction work here."

She said she and Machaba had got along fine and she considered him to be a friend.

    [...]

She even offered him some tea and warned him he had to leave before 1pm because her employer would be returning home.

Machaba declined the tea, but joined her on the couch, where she was watching TV with baby Marzaan on her lap. That's the last thing she remembers.

"I can't remember what happened after that. The next thing I remember is waking up in hospital," she said.

Sekhu said they had never been romantically linked, and were talking on the couch about a man, identified only as Patrick, who had once pursued her, and who had worked on the construction team with Machaba.

The lesson here is that letting a single seemingly civilized/polite/decent member of another group (the nanny in this case) into your life sphere opens the door for contact with their culture as a whole, regardless of the intentions or nature of the person you trusted initially.

Thank you, I missed that one.

What on earth is the nanny doing offering him tea and entertaining him on the couch whilst looking after a baby!
