What Martial Arts Do You Practice?

I personally train in oriental martial arts, mostly due to accessibility, Ohio is dominated by Japanese and Chinese martial system schools many of which coordinate together and spawned descendant schools which combined each others systems like the one I participate under which our lineage chart states is primarily rooted in Shotokan with influences from Chinese Gong Fu (one of the systems implemented is a system which my uncle is a Sifu under, this system is a combo school of Northern and Southern Shaolin open hand).

The primary focus is practical application and sparring (we do actual contact, not that tag crap).

I would enjoy learning some authentic European sword fighting but accessibility is limited so I work with what I can get.

I must say though it's some tough stuff with our conditioning, made me realize just how out of shape I have become and I am grateful for the opportunity to train.

I am also curious about the views of some here about European peoples practicing Oriental fighting styles, I personally have nothing against it as I study it for the training and skill not for enculturation. What is nice is the school I train under actually encourages us to acknowledge and respect our own individual roots as it is a key part to understanding oneself fully.

I always preferred an axe over a sword, closest thing to a sword I would feel comfortable wielding is a Pugio which is really a dagger (my Pugio is a bit over sized so it's a small sword/large dagger). I do fancy my cavalry sabre just for the fun of it but I would not feel confident using it in combat. As for a gun, yes a gun is the more modern approach but I fancy having something to fall on when the bullets run out or where carrying a firearm is not an option.

Jujitsu(Japanese style) for over 10 years i have thought of opening my own school here as i have to drive 140km's to train now

    Ninjitsu for two

Karate(shotokan and a heap of others) I tried it and didnt like them

Hapkido very good art...but i prefer ninjitsu

Wing chung again a good art see above

Kick boxing Ouch! and limited appeal as there's no ground work or true controlling of the opponent

Judo unless you get a really good teach that will teach the old style then its a sport

I also tried some mixed martial arts but here they tend to be bias to one style of fighting
I also did some greco roman wrestling......in my unfit state and working 12Hr's day day 5Days a week i was going no where fast.....it was a great work out tho
Tasmanian twice the heads!!.......twice the intelligence!?

Without commenting on how good the system is (i've never seen it) it's claim to be a native North European martial art is BS.

Most martial arts are useless, especially Kung-fu and Taekwondo. I have practiced Muay Thai for 3-4 years now, but have no plans competing or anything. I am mostly interested in acquiring the self-defense skills.
