I have always liked German Shepards.

I also really like Wolf-hybrids as well.

    Any other Wolf-hybrid fans here?

I sometimes see a very nice breed, kind of looks like this but perhaps more slender and light and sometimes with light eyes I believe. Anyone know what breed this is?

Never mind, apparently this is most probably a Swedish breed called Jämthund. Maybe what I have been seeing are Siberian Huskies though.

Never had any, but the history behind the Hovawart fascinates me. The very name sounds so anciently germanic... Hovawart, aka der Hofwächter, "the guardian of the farm"...

That would be my favorite breed of dog.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hovawart

One of the first documented recordings comes from the year 1210 when the German castle Ordensritterburg was besieged by Slavic invaders. The castle fell and its inhabitants including the Lord were slaughtered, however the Lord's infant son was saved by one of the castle's Hovawarts. In spite of being wounded itself, the dog dragged the tiny child to a neighbouring castle and thus saved the boy's life. This young boy, Eike von Repkow, grew up to become a legendary figure in the history of German law. He later published the Sachsenspiegel, the oldest Code of Law to survive from medieval Germany. Not surprisingly, the Hovawart is mentioned with praise. The Schwabenspiegel, a law text published in 1274 and based on Eike von Repkow's Sachsenspiegel, lists the Hovawart among the dogs you have to replace and pay restitution for if they are killed or stolen.
By 1473, Heinrich Mynsinger described the Hovawart as one of "The Five Noble Breeds" and among its uses listed that it was useful for tracking the robber and miscreant. This along with references to the Hovawart in German law show that it was a readily identifiable breed and held in similar esteem to that of hunting dogs.
    A much germanic dog indeed.
    The Stranger within my gates, he may be evil or good, but I cannot tell what powers control - what reasons sway his mood;
Nor when the Gods of his far-off land shall repossess his blood.

My favorite breed is the elegant and intelligent Papillon. They are very tiny - Chihuahua sized, but they're a very old breed from the Middle Ages. They were one of the "sleeve" breeds - the kind you would stick in your sleeves to keep your hands warm. They don't make good guard dogs, but they're very sociable. I have two.

    Minnie

and Poochini (he likes to climb trees)

My two favorites are both great farm dogs.

The Bernese Mountain Dog (Switzerland) is not only one of the best tempered breeds I have ever come across, but they are exceedingly smart, loyal, non-wanderers, and beautiful big dogs with a heart of gold. My favorite quirk of theirs is that they enjoy sitting on your feet!

Great Pyrenees are incredibly beautiful and useful dogs. Without any training, they instinctively guard large flocks of livestock. They are a little head-strong and like to wander, but are completely dedicated to their work, the livestock and their owners.

What Are Your Favourite Dog Breeds?

Boerwindhond (This breed is considrably larger then other Greyhounds or Whippets)

German Gun Dog (German short Hair Pointer, this breed has an interesting history being bred for the German Aristocracy as hunting dogs in the 1700)

    Waimaraner (The Grey Ghost)

    Boerboel (Kaffer Versapper/Nigger Liquidiser)

I Prefer Working dogs, as a rule they require a firm hand when young, but developed excellent personalities and love for their owners.
Although the word "Commando" was wrongly used to describe all Boer soldiers, a commando was a unit formed from a particular district. None of the units was organized in regular companies, battalions or squadrons. The Boer commandos were individualists who were difficult to control, resented formal discipline or orders, and earned a British jibe that"every Boer was his own general".

I really like Rottweilers.I was givin one for my 12th birthday that I named
Bruno. With a little work he turned out to be an excellent childhood companion
and an even better guard dog for the family.
Rottweilers are an ancient breed and where used in the Roman Army. They originated with the German mercenaries called ‘Foederati’.
