Which Historical Figure Does Aragorn Best Embody?

My best guess would be Charles Martel. What do you all think? Aragorn to me represents all the best aspects of the free Nordic man. He is a woodsman, a poet, a passionate lover, a warrior-king, and he is strong in many different ways. He was a born leader, and triumphs over all the evil forces of the world.

When I was young, I always wanted to grow up to be like him (yeah lol, I wanted to fight orcs and all), but I can already see I don't have many of those aspects in me

I would say he embodies many aspects of Herman the Cherusker, hero of the battle in the Teutoburger Forest. Pride, artfulness, leader competence, tactical rafinesse and persuasiveness.

Is this an appropriate sub-forum for this thread to be in? Can this thread be moved to the history forum perhaps?

One would have to see it from Tolkien's perspective, and since Tolkien was a Catholic, who knows, Martel may be a part of the inspiration. But it is also qute clear he also comes from inspiration of old North European folk tales, being a hero in a fantasy world, much based on mythologies. Maybe Jesus as well? Since he was a "nobody" who became a great king.

I'm sure there are some experts that has delved alot into this, so there should be some info on the internet or in books.

In the volume entitled the "Lost Tales" Christopher Tolkien had mentioned some of his fathers notes on his inspirations for the characters and settings in Middle Earth. I will research some in this volume when I get home and see if there are any notes specifically dealing with Aragorn, I cannot remember off the top of my head.

Godfrey of Bouillon also matches up with Aragorn. One of my personal favorite historical figures.
