Are There Any Buddhists on Skadi?

Some Japanese-born teachers of Zen Buddhism in the West in the past actually discouraged their Western Buddhist students from describing or identifying themselves as Buddhists to non-Buddhists.

The other term they discouraged their Western students from using in describing themselves was "Zen Buddhist." Insisting with some vigor and vehemence on only describing themselves as Buddhists, not "Zen Buddhists."

"We are Buddhists, not 'Zen Buddhists.'"

I can dig it. There is Zen Buddhism but there are no Zen Buddhists: There are only Buddhists that practise Zen. One can, too, practise Zen without even being a Buddhist.

But for myself, I found trying to practise Zen without Buddhism to be an empty, unfulfilling, and in the last analysis, futile and vain exercise. When I took refuge, I took refuge in it all of it: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. And as far as this Buddhist practiser (N.B.: not practitioner) is concerned, it was the smartest thing I ever did, or one of them.
