    Sweden Democrats in Decline: Poll

The far-right Sweden Democrats have fallen below the four percent threshold required for seats in parliament at a general election, a new voter survey by Synovate shows.

The Sweden Democrats' decline from 5.6 percent to 3.6 percent is deemed statistically significant.

The left-green parties retained their lead in the polls and would claim a majority of parliamentary seats if an election were held today.

The opposition coalition claimed a combined 49.1 percent of the voter support, with the Alliance government parties polling 44.5 percent. The gulf between the blocs has declined since February - from 6.6 to 4.6 percentage points.

The Green Party received their highest level of support for 14 years with 10.2 percent.

The Social Democrats polled only 33.7 percent however and once again came in under the record low showing in the 2006 general election. The Left Party claimed 5.2 percent in the poll.

On the Alliance side there were only small changes with the Moderate Party on 27.5 percent, Liberal Party (Folkpartiet) on 7.2 percent, Centre Party on 5.1 percent and the Christian Democrats on 4.6 percent.

Synovate interviewed 2,699 people aged above 18 from March 8-24th and asked the question: If a parliamentary election were held today, which party would you vote for?

The poll was published in the Dagens Nyheter and Sydsvenskan dailies.

Good. They are neocons, not nationalists. One of their highest spokesmen just held a speach about that there are to few blacks in the party.

We do not need another Zionist and Multiculturalist party in parliament. Good riddance I say.

As one of the major news papers put it: the Sweden Democrats want more of everything, but how are they going to pay for it? By cutting down on the costs of immigration they respond, but at the same time they are proposing massive increases in foreign aid as immigration is reduced which will nullify the intended savings.

They don't propose repatriation on a massive scale either, which means we are stuck with the wellfare abusers of today minus the ones that would have come at best, plus the massive expansion of government spending proposed by SD. They will appear to be about as economically responsible as the "former" communists in the election if the media plays its cards right.

They would have done well by proposing a much more balanced, center-right economical policy to steal the right-wing vote whilst being close enough to the center to attract social democratic voters.

Överbudspolitik, over-bidding your opponent with unsustainable and economically dubious proposals is not the way to go.

I hope your avatar is just a nostalgic symbol of a better past, Patrioten!

Many people say one should vote for SD, "because they are better than the Establishment". That is true, but how much better are they now really? They still speak about violence against ethnic Swedes, from time to time. I wonder how much they will actually adress such things if they get to the Parliament. They have so many new members, many of them will probably do anything to stay in parliament if they get in, so I don't think they will "shake things up" in there. They do have other conservative policies, such as on family and punishment on crime, but the big question is, will they talk about those at all? There is the chance they will become the new Ny Demokrati, and fill no role once they get some power.

Indeed it is, of my appreciation for the former Conservative right of the 1910s and 1920s.

We will have to wait and see what change they can actually bring. I'm still hoping for some symbolic change at least, regardless of the political deficiencies of the party itself.

The SD are not a neo-con party as one earlier poster said, look at their manifesto - their anti-multiculturalism and anti-diversity.

Besides one poll that shows a 1% to 2% or so drop is hardly a sign of declining support, its statistically irrelevant (despite what the moron in the article stated).

Their main candidate in Södertälje held a speach about there being to few blacks in the party. They also now have a banner on their website saying that they support gays and transvestites.

SD where nationalist until sometime in the mid 90s. In 2001 the last nationalists left the party. It is amazing that after 14 years people still call them nationalists.

You're jealous on SD. ND will never reach riksdagen.

Would there be a point to it if they did? Just judging from what I've read here, they appear to be to the left of other European nationalist parties like the BNP while at the same time attracting less support than them.
