It looks good although something doesn't look right. Oh yeah, theres a Black guy in it!Even in a film set in ancient Britian they just had to put a Black in there somewhere.

I'd be more concerned for the portrayal of Germanics as woad wearing and medieval Longbow wielding warriors than some obvious black actor.
Looks like a very good film. When is it due for release?
They are Picts, not germanics.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1020558/plotsummaryBritain, A.D. 117. Quintus Dias, the sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, marches north with General Virilus' legendary Ninth Legion, under orders to wipe the Picts from the face of the Earth and destroy their leader, Gorlacon. Written by Anonymous
AD 117. The Roman Empire stretches from Egypt to Spain, and East as far as the Black Sea. But in northern Britain, the relentless onslaught of conquest has ground to a halt in face of the guerrilla tactics of an elusive enemy: the savage and terrifying Picts. Quintus Dias (Fassbender), sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, marches north with General Virilus' (West) legendary Ninth Legion, under orders to wipe the Picts from the face of the earth and destroy their leader Gorlacon. But when the legion is ambushed on unfamiliar ground, and Virilus taken captive, Quintus faces a desperate struggle to keep his small platoon alive behind enemy lines. Enduring the harsh terrain and evading their remorseless Pict pursuers led by revenge-hungry Pict Warrior Etain (Kurylenko), the band of soldiers race to rescue their General and to reach the safety of the Roman frontier.

The black actor is portraying a Roman Legionnaire not an ancient Briton. There were plenty of black soldiers in the Roman Army. Their ranks were filled will people from all over the Roman Empire, though men were usually forbidden to serve in their country of origin for obvious reasons. That is why Africans and Syrians were found in Britain - as far away from home as possible.
This movie reminds me of Robert E. Howard's Men of the Shadows. Looks like REH has found himself once again in the background of our media![]()
The suspension of disbelief could have been maintained if they didnt include the cliched pc female warrior.
Lame.
Life is a well of delight; but where the rabble also drink, there all fountains are poisoned.
This looks great. There is a reason the Romans had to build a wall in northern
Britain. And that reason was the Picts.Even the Anglo-Saxons and later on the Normans had problems controlling these warriors.Scottish people are awesome warriors.
As far as I know, no ancient negroid skeletal remains have been found in Britain, except for the very spurious "mixed race" woman reported in some other thread recently. Also, negroid patrilineal lineages are seldom found in DNA studies of the British Isles or Roman-occupied Northern Europe.
Yes, but its always a negroid that they put in every movie, even if the Roman Legionnaire had zero blacks they would still have just put one in the movie.
Anyway, to quote a youtube message:
They are NEITHER "Celts", nor "Vikings" nor "Anglo-Saxons". They are the ancestor tribes that would later become known as the "Picts" approx. 180 years after this film is set. Therefore the natives fighting here are most probably either "Caledonaii" or "Maetae"
I have to say this movie looks absolutely outstanding. Of course, I am a tremendous fan of that era in European history so I am bound to get excited. My only hope is that it will be tremendously successful and it will inspire a more movies set around that timeframe. I think everyone on this site would be very happy to see a similar release focusing upon Arminius' defeat of Varus' legions at Teutoberger Vald, or maybe even a modern adaptation of the Ring Saga with today's special effects.
