Yesterday the referendum about the erection of the controversial asylum seekers hostel in the Burgenland village of Eberau took place. The result was crystal clear. More than 90 percent of the inhabitants are against asylum seekers in their village.
The mayor of Eberau (Peoples party) confirmed the result yesterday at 10:30pm. 801 valid votes were counted. There were 722 votes against, and 79 votes in favour. Supporters of the project promised more jobs in police, administration and infrastructure. But the fear of the bad example of an asylum seekers hostel in the Lower Austrian town Traiskirchen predominated.
Now the plans for the asylum seekers hostel in Eberau are history. The Interior minister of the Peoples party promised to accept the democratic decision.
The biggest refusal of the project was evident in the district of its proposed location: 96,15 percent of votes against. Such clear result was quite a shock for Eberaus mayor. He said that it was a big mistake to plan something like that, and begged his citizens pardon. But he also told that demission is no option for him.
The chairman of the citizens’ initiative against the asylum seekers hostel triumphed and declared that the mayor is mature for demission. “We are very satisfied”, he told to medias. If he wants to be the next mayor? “I am not sure”, he answered.
