    Kiaora

Hi there I'm Rose from New Zealand

I am bit of a history buff and find myself particularly interested in Germanic and East Asian cultures. I am currently doing a Masters thesis on the history of mathematics in Japan during the Edo period.

As far as I have been able to gather I am a 4th or 5th generation New Zealand European. My ancestors came here from England, Ireland, and Scotland. My Grandmother has indicated that there is either German or Dutch blood on my Grandfather's side, but this has yet to be backed by evidence I have personally encountered, but she claims it is there. Interestingly enough I am constantly being asked if I am part Japanese, Korean or Icelandic (at least once a month) because my features are not typically European, but it is just one of those random things lol.

Where does New Zealand believe Iceland is situated?

How far does knowledge of Iceland extent in Zealand?

I presume Kiaro is some kind of greeting, but from what language is it?

    Thank you for your replies.

"Kiaora" is a Maori (the indigenous people of NZ) greeting which means "Hello". The Maori language stands alongside English as an official language of New Zealand, so such greetings are fairly common here.

As for a New Zealander's knowledge of Iceland, I would say that 90% of my countrymen would not know where Iceland is, even though it is situated not too far away from England, Ireland, and Scotland where many of us originate from. I would say that most believe Icelandic people are fairly caucasian but with an exotic look like Björk. When people here think of Icelandic people they would think of her, so when people ask if I am part Icelandic they do so because I remind them of her. Sadly New Zealand is a very isolated country and most of how we learn about other countries is via the media, and she is the only Icelandic person most people here would have seen so they have formed this generalisation that this is how Icelandic people look.

This isolation is why I have joined this community, I really do want to learn more about cultures like Iceland so I can lose this ignorance. I would ask the Icelandic community of this board to please forgive my countrymen for thinking you all look like Björk, they do not mean to offend!

Welcome here, nzrose. I thought it must have been Björk who peoples associated the "Icelandic" look with. If they get their impressions from the media, you could show them the winners of Miss Iceland or other Icelandic celebrities than Björk, which look less exotic.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay.
