    Traditional Bavarian Folk Music

    Hi Skadites,

today I want to introduce some Bavarian Volksmusik songs and artists. As some of you may I know there´s a huge distinction between commercial pseudo Volksmusik (so called "Volkstümliche Musik") and real traditional Volksmusik. If you see metrosexual-like "Bavarian" boys and men smiling and singing at a large concert all around the world you can be pretty sure that they are representatives of that pseudo faction. Pseudo "Volksmusik" has no history, no tradition and no sense. It´s just about money and some stupid stereotypical soppy lyrics. The melody of all the performers are interchangeable.

In contrast to that illness of or music scene, traditional Volksmusik has a heart and a soul, a strong history in the respective region and local color.

Note: Most of the singers use the Bavarian dialect. Even native German speakers have a hard time understanding at least parts of our dialect. So if you took a German course at school and wonder why you can´t understand more than a few words: Well, don't worry.

I´ll add more and more interprets over time.

I hear some similarities between some of this and bluegrass/southern music from the States.

I really like this music, it seems to have captured the folk spirit of this region. The tunes tend to be played a little slower than Irish folk music (although I think most Irish folk musicians play too fast).

They seem to do a lot more work with the bow, than finger ornamenting, which gives it quite a different sound, but the tunes in themselves seem very happy and lively, different to Irish (which I play) which alternate from very, very fast and lively or very sad airs.

I did not really associate folk music to Germanic countries, as the nations around the North Sea, tend not to have a Strong folk tradition, (anymore that is) or it maybe that folk is so dominated by Ireland, and Scotland to a lesser extent. So really glad to see this style of music being so popular in Germany and Austria.

My first thread update in 2011.

Annemarie from Rauris plays the Styrian harmonica and sings a jolly Bavarian folk song. How many of our members who speak or learned Standard German can understand our dialect?

An other one of Annemarie: "Der alte Jäger" She´s playing in a ski lodge for the skiers who stop for a bite to eat.

"Franzl Bayrischer" performed by Rinner Musi

    Rinner Musi - Franzl Boarischer

"Leckmicha Marsch" (funny play of words...) performed by Herbert Pixner Trio

Herbert Pixner Trio - Leckmicha Marsch

"Mittenwalder Ausschuß Gsang" with an old Bavarian folk song

Andrea Achleitner is an award-winning virtuosa on the Styrian harmonica:
