Arrow Arguing for the existance of different races

I am not undecided but I think this topic suits this part of the forum.

Often one meet people who claim that there is no such thing as different races. This is quite common but how does one argue this. That is, what is the best way to prove that human races do exist? It would be interesting to hear other peoples thoughts on this.

Post Re: Arguing for the existance of different races

First off, it's often best to pick and choose your arguments. If you meet someone who is certain that there is no such thing as different races of humans, it should be obvious that their head is so far up their ass they will be unable to hear your arguments. You could point to repeated (non-biased) studies that show different average cranial capacities, different average IQ scores, different average bone mass, or to higher incidences of certain diseases among blacks. In the face of data like this, said person will usaully lose their cool, smug demeanor and degenerate into hateful name-calling. They will call you a liar, racist, nazi, etc.

There is no point in having these kind of arguments.

#1 for this thread is to avoid stating your true opinions and ideas unless you are in the presence of open-minded people.

This thread went into this same thing you are exploring. Maybe you can find some good answers here: http://forums.skadi.net/showthread.php?t=28004

The best way to prove the existence of any biological entity are the participants themselves. In this case all Homo sapiens, eskimos, Bantu, Indians, Chinese, as well as Europeans all recognize a racial difference among our species on the folk level. And on the folk level, we all recognize that we are more closely related to our parents, siblings, cousins, distant relatives and others we most closely share genes with than with other populations of people who look different from us. This basic recognition of the biologic differences among and between us all is the final test of the validity of the concept of race in our species. In other words, it is because we say it is and that is what matters.

The burden of proof is always on the person who makes the claim.

So if someone comes along and says some imbelicity like "there are no races, just the human race", or "race is a construct", it's not your job to prove her wrong, but rather she has to prove her claim to you. So ask for proof, and then keep asking questions, and when the inevitable contradictions arise, point them out.

Warning: the conversation will almost certainly end with your opponent screaming at you and calling you a racist and Nazi. That will happen as soon as she runs through her standard issue arguments and you blow holes in them with a few reasonable questions.

Post Re: Arguing for the existance of different races

This issue is usually just a matter of definition, it seems. Most of the different races seem to share many genes in common; I think this may be why some say race doesn't exist. But I don't think being of a different 'race' has ever meant sharing no genes. It is really a straw man argument.

The best thing to do would be to ask them how they define race.

Thanks everyone! Regarding genes, humans only differ with a little more than one and a half percent from chimpanzees.

Human share about 99.9% (actual number may be slightly lower) common DNA among eachother. Humans also share 90% common DNA with a mouse.
