    "Honorary Whites" Status?

This came up in a South African section thread.

Honorary Whites is a term that was used by the apartheid regime of South Africa as a designation for the Japanese people, which granted them almost all of the same rights and privileges as Whites (except for the right to vote, as well as being exempt from conscription), after a trade pact was formed between South Africa and Japan in the early 1960's, when Tokyo's Yawata Iron & Steel Co. offered to purchase 5,000,000 tons of South African pig iron, worth more than $250,000,000, over a ten-year period.

With such a huge deal in the works, Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd determined that it would be tactless to subject the Japanese people to the same restrictions as other non-White ethnicities, since trade delegations from Japan would now regularly visit South Africa for business. Thenceforth, Pretoria's Group Areas Board publicly announced that all Japanese people would be considered White, at least for purposes of residence. Johannesburg's city officials even decided that "in view of the trade agreements" the municipal swimming pools would be open to all Japanese guests.

These changes seemed grossly unfair to South Africa's small Chinese community of roughly 7,000, at that time, who, it seemed, would enjoy none of the new benefits given to the Japanese. "'If anything, we are whiter in appearance than our Japanese friends.' huffed one of Cape Town's leading Chinese businessmen. Demanded another indignantly: 'Does this mean that the Japanese, now that they are [considered] White, cannot associate with us without running afoul of the Immorality Act?'"

Chinese people could nevertheless often get by by riding on Japanese coattails, at least at the swimming pools, because, as the chairman of the city council's Health and Amenities Committee admitted, "It would be extremely difficult for our gatekeepers to distinguish between Chinese and Japanese".

Up until the abolishment of apartheid, the "Honorary White" status was eventually extended to people of other East-Asian nationalities, including those from South Korea and Taiwan.

The term, or other similar terms, have been used to refer to East Asians in other "White" or Western countries as well, including Germany, England, Italy, and Russia—albeit in different historical periods and circumstances.

In addition, certain non-South African Black elite athletes, such as the West Indian rebel team who were invited to South Africa during the apartheid regime, were awarded "Honorary White" status to circumvent legislation.

What are your thoughts on granting honorary white status?
You're either white, or you're not. The terminology especially, is bothersome IMO.

Well basically we can use the term "civilized race". Almost in all cases it is the same as "white", but the Japanese are non-white yet very civilized. Their culture and history is very similar to Germanic though in a few ways strange to us. However they are polite, intelligent, hard working, not likely to comit crime, carry themselves well etc. I could easily work with a typical Japanese, or have them as my neighbor etc. compared to say most blacks, arabs, etc. who are likely to assualt you, be too stupid for the same school as you etc. in other words who can't fit into a civilized society properly at least not by what a European would consider civilized.

It's not that they are the same race, but that they meet certain standards. They aren't really inferior in other words. The Japanese are by far the most civilized race of Asia and the most similar to Europeans. The Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese are like the Slavs or Celts of Europe. The Japs are like the Romans, Greeks or Germanics. Some of the best Chinese might be able to be consider like an average Japanese but many of the Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese are slightly less civilized than japs so you start going down a slippery slope there. Then again a lot of whites today are trashy as well. Similar situation some whites being civilized some being trash. Overall the Japanese are such a small population you don't really have as much of that.

It was a money thing. If the Eskimos were rolling in money and keen to spend in SA they would be honourary whites too probably. I do think the Japanese are a culture to be admired though. Nothing wrong with being Japanese I say.
