68 Per Cent of UK Regards Itself As "Working Class"

According to the results of a survey, 68 per cent of the population regards itself as "working class", which surprised many academics, as they've been telling us for years the working class doesn't exist. They must be as confused as they would be if 68 per cent of the population announced they were unicorns.

So some of them have decided not to accept the result. For example, one Cambridge economics professor said: "The results could be based on a misunderstanding over what 'working class' meant." In other words, intellectuals have worked out there's no working class any more, but this fact hasn't yet got through to the working class. The professor went on: "I am very surprised at these results" because "most people have delusions of grandeur".

This is a novel approach, to insist the people who answered the questions got confused. Tony Blair might adopt this method with the war against Iraq, and say the only reason it appears a majority are against it is because people get Iraq mixed up with Lyme Regis. One columnist suggested yesterday that class is determined by whether you prefer wine or beer.[..]

Agreed. There's a lot of inverted-snobbery in Marxist-Anarcho circles. Class is important, but its not the be all and end all. The class war is a phony war, it is in no one's interest to either 'win' or 'lose' it.

The working class identity was the basis for the sucesses of the left, therefor it is not surprising that alot of people still cling on to this bogus marxist identity after being duped by the marxists for decades. People identify themselves with the victim identity that is the worker and thus accept being treated like a child by the socialist substitute mother we call government.

I've always found the term "working class" politically loaded and, at best, very blurry.

In its literal sense, it means all those who have to work for a living - which is pratically everyone - so its true meaning is more implied than real. To the Marxist elite it's all tied in with some romantic notion of getting one's hands dirty, and since they destroyed Britain's manufacturing base they think all those who have since dispensed with their overalls have actually improved their social status in post-industrial Britain ... WRONG!! Many of them are far worse off now in real terms than they were a few decades ago! Also, calling people working class was useful when the Marxists wished to overthrow the existing order because of the vague sense of victimhood and exploitation attached to it, but now that they themselves are running things this tag and all those who identify with it have become an embarassment (and even a threat!) to them.

I suspect that the main aim of opinion polls such as this one is to reinforce the new economic doctrine of consumerism by upgrading the working class and hopefully creating a feelgood factor which translates into middle class spending habits. The problem is that the prols won't play along with this illusion if it doesn't fit in with their own reality, as appears to be the case here.

I was born into a lower working class (if there is such a class) family in an ultra working class northern industrial town. My occupation and circumstances are, judged by external appearances and traditional attitudes, entirely working class.

But I have never had any sympathy with traditional working class ideas and have never been left-wing. But on the other hand I have never wanted to be part of the conventional middle class, although most people would consider my beliefs to be right wing.

I am a National Socialist and believe that the conventional or traditional classifications are not appropriate for myself and others like me.

However, there are many people who do use these classifications, but it seems to me that the distinction between them is not as clear cut as it once was. They overlap considerably, and indeed for some people are virtually interchangeable at will depending on what they are trying to prove.

I believe that a lot of people say they are working class for the same reason that White Americans who have the tiniest trace of non-white blood will say they Native Americans - it is considered "cool".

How can the working class not exist anymore? I'm sure theres still people who still do industrial and manual work for money. I believe the changes in the UK have made the underclass and middle class larger, while shrinking the size of the traditional working class. Leftist terms for these groupings or not, people can be grouped this way. Just depends if you want to group them like that. The same is with some of the left that claims race does not exist.

The names for groups in society will continue to change as the society does, you don't here about peasants anymore.
