    Mythology Comics for Christmas

For those who know only the "Mighty Thor" from Marvel and have an average French level here are 3 versions of the Siegfried legend that are to be offered for Christmas:

    1)SIEGFRIED (+ Tome 2 WALKYRIE)

from Alex Alice. Originally planned as a cartoon
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ObJ_9NQsMY

SIEGFRIED is to the norse mythology what "The Sword in the Stone" is to Celtic (Arthurian) Mythology
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sword_in_the_Stone_(film)

This mean the story is focalised on Siegfried childhood as apprentice of the Nibelung blacksmith Mime. (just like Arthur is by Merlin the Conjurer in the Disney cartoon) that missing in the classic legends. Trained as well as an hunter by wolves, Siegfried has a bit of Moogly (Book of the Jungle). I was quite surprise by the author vision of the Walkyries which are really etheral

Much more like glowing ghost than Gretchen with big boobs in armored bra bringing hydromel cups.

A good comic for children, I'm looking forward for the cartoon

    2)LE CREPUSCULE DES DIEUX

    from Jarry & Djief
    http://www.studiokameleon.com/SoleilCeltic/Blog/dotclear/index.php?category/Albums/Crépuscule-des-Dieux-(Le)

Tome 1 La Malédiction des Nibelungen (Nieblungen Curse)
    Tome 2 Segfried
    Tome 3 Fafner
+ Tome 0 (prolog) La Malédiction de l'Anneau (Curse of the Ring) from Istin & Lemercier

Tome 0 was publish later, and is much more pure mytho than legend with historical allusion.
Nice to see fight between Aesir & demon, Nibelungen civil war,.. but not really how Franks, Burgund or Vikings used to live or dress...

It is very interesting to compare this version to the one of Alex Alice. For J&D, Siegfried & Mime live as hermits but still have contact with nearby village. Siegfried (blondy hair for J&D, raven hair for AA) even have the village next door girl as girlfriend!

Strangly in J&D version Mime is more monstruous (dark grey skin, goat like face with horn) than AA with a Disney cartoon face.
Graphically, you really fell the influence of Lord of the Ring:

    - in her last stand with her brother Siegmund at the gate of Wolsung stronghold, Siegline plays "Eowyn reveals"
    - Alberic fight in a Balrog like shape (including whip !) a spear & beard Wotan who look like Gandalf
    - Sigmund sword is plitted in shard like Isildur one (not in just 2 part). The story itself (until know) is more influenced by the Völsung Saga and Niebelungen Lied than Wagner :
    - Völsungen fight against the Huns (led by an Etzel/Attila big bastard) rather than against the Saxons
    - Siegmund & Siegline are NOT in love each other (brotherhood frienship as Siegline is a tomboy) and therefore do not find any pleasure commiting incest, but only do it as Siegline doesn't want to bear the child of his father murderer (King of Huns) that will raped her the next hour.

The art remember sometime the Larry Elmore illustration for Dragonlance and other D&D. The Aesirs & Walkyries looks like Elmor High Elves (without pointed ears) German like Rider from Rohan (from the movie).

Everyone is tall, slim or athletic, blonde with blue eyes, anglo-saxon dressing. Except of course the Huns, who looks like drunk brawler of local tavern and the Nibelungen.

Special notice to the topless siliconed "Rheinmächen" in gold string that are coming out of a Rubben painting, rather than so-slim-that-their-hair-hide-their-naked-body undines we are use too.

I would advice this comic serie (regrouped now in a onebook compilation) for 13+ teenagers (because of the incest that generate Siegfried and Rheinmächen Playmates)

    3) L'ANNEAU DES NIBELUNGEN (Nibelungen Lied)

    from Graffet & Jarry
    http://www.studiokameleon.com/SoleilCeltic/Blog/dotclear/index.php?category/Univers-Nordique/L-Anneau-des-Nibelungen

It is much more an Artbook with text than a comic. The art is nearly "dark fantasy", with a mix a painting and sketch. Story follows 90% Wagner trilogy with an inspiration of Dark Kingdom /Curse of the Ring for the 10%
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Kingdom:_The_Dragon_King to the point I doubt Kristina Loken & Benno Fürmann were used or not as model for the painter...

Some scene could even have been sketchbook of the movie !

Bad Saxon vs good Burgund, beast like Sigmund, story start as Rhein Gold, finish as Twilight of Gods, severe Wotan than become nearly senil.

    Siegfried Childhood is forgotten.

This would be for 16+ and adult but you can use the illustration to teach your children a "soft story" as artwork is really great.

    Comic for Christmas 2010

Soleil not only carry-on publishing "Le crépuscule des dieux" (Twilllight of gods/Gotterdammerung)
    http://www.soleilprod.com/serie%7C37..._DES_DIEUX_LE_
    http://www.soleilprod.com/public/ext...repDieuxT4.pdf
which is french adaptation of Niebelungenlied
(already 4 tomes + a prequel) but also started a new serie:
    ODIN
    http://www.soleilprod.com/album%7C19...DIN_-_Partie_1
you can also see the 1st pages online
    http://www.soleilprod.com/public/extraits/OdinT1.pdf

As you can see graphic style is very different as well as the vision.
"Le crépuscule des dieux" was classical sword & sorcery comic with a legend style (human & gods drawn the same way, same clothing,...)
"Odin" is much more mythological. Gods are really shown as non-human.
Loki hair, eyebrow, eyes are flames, making him looking like efreet/fire elemental.
Frigga as goddess of sky & weather is a blue skin naked woman (just as Djinn/air elemental)
Walkyrie helm is a mix of Viking & Greek Hoplites one, they have the aircut of the native american in Ridley Scot movie of Chistopher Colombus have fight bare-breast...

But the story itself follow perfectly the pure mythologic part (creation of world, eye sacrifice, hanging at yggdrassil, death of Balder,...) but on tome 1 nothing about Rhein Gold nor Siegfried.
