President Jacob Zuma said on Wednesday two of the major obstacles standing in the way of the country’s development were racism and xenophobia.

Zuma was speaking at Freedom Park during Reconciliation Day commemorations.

The president called on the nation to work towards obliterating these, so South Africans and foreigners living in the country can enjoy their democratically enshrined rights to freedom.

Zuma said the country was born from struggle adding its people should lead their lives with compassion, forgiveness and acceptance.

“In this era of promoting renewal we must promote the values of none-racialism, reconciliation and none-sexism amongst all our people,” said Zuma.
