Strache Wants Debate on End of Presidency

    By David Rogers

Freedom Party (FPÖ) leader Heinz-Christian Strache has called for a debate on ending the presidency in a bid to save money.

Strache said today (Weds) he wanted discussion on abolishing the office of president or merging it with other offices to cut costs.

He added the debate was "necessary and important".

Meanwhile the FPÖ leader said he believed incumbent Heinz Fischer would run again as the joint candidate of the People’s Party (ÖVP) and the Social Democrats (SPÖ), adding his party had not decided whether to field a presidential candidate and who that person would be if it did.

Asked it he would be the FPÖ’s candidate, Strache said: "I have not been asked to run."

Almost two-thirds of Austrians said they were satisfied with Fischer’s performance as president in a poll last month just days after the 71-year-old announced he would run for a second term in office.

Should the office of presidency be abolished in your opinion? In Austria, like in Germany, the president has a reduced role. It's the chancellor that is the central figure.

I think both presidencies should be abolished and the monarchies restored. Not that that would save money, but they could easily boot the foreigners and invest the money saved into restoring the ancient social contract, which is the only legitimate government.

It would save money, because royal families largely subsist on their own funds. That, and the amount of money thrown at German politicians is quite astonishing.

As to restoring the monarchy, I couldn't agree more.

Abolish the republic and bring back the Kaiser. All I have to say about this . Of course there might be some problems for Germany in this case that first need to be removed.
