    John Bauer

Bauer was born on June 4, 1882 in Jonkoping, Sweden. At 16 he studied art in Stockholm and by 18 he was at the Swedish Royal Academy. The prevailing styles of the day were those of Anders Zorn and Carl Larsson - two great Swedish artistic icons. Bauer strongly felt their influence, but also was swayed by the surreal/fantasy work of Arnold Bocklin. While still a student, he received his first major commission. It was a collection of fairy tales by Anna Wahlenberg called "Lange, Lange Sedan" ("Long, Long Ago"). After four years of study at the Academy, he was commissioned to illustrate a book on Lapland.

In 1907 Bauer began his association with "Bland Tomtar och Troll" ("Among Elves and Trolls"), an annual Christmas book for children. It was this work that made him famous in Sweden (and among artists elsewhere).

I samma ögonblick var hon förvandlad till en underskön liten älva ("At that moment the frog became a beautiful fairy girl")

    http://forums.skadi.net/photoplog/index.php?n=4210

Suddenly, the frog laughed, a laugh as clear as silver.
It jumped down from the firewood and
at that moment became a beautiful fairy girl
with rosy cheeks, sky-blue eyes, and curly gold hair.

    Alvida's Window

    http://forums.skadi.net/photoplog/index.php?n=4207

Alvida did not touch any of the fruit herself. She let it fall,
piece by piece, and tired and thirsty travelers came along,
picked up a pear or an apple, and blessed the gift.

    I have the Crown!

    http://forums.skadi.net/photoplog/index.php?n=4311

You are too foolish for words. But if, before I
count three, you give me a solid gold crown fit for
a queen, you and your brother may leave in peace.

Now he was riding, jubilantly happy, on the airy
billowing highway toward the shining golden
    Castle of Rosy Clouds.

    The Golden Key

And she held up a key, a fine key made of pure gold.

    The Witch of Hulta Wood

    http://forums.skadi.net/photoplog/index.php?n=4324

Out of the trees came the witch of Hulta Wood,
running from a pack of hunting dogs, her raven-black hair
whipping in the wind, and her eyes flashing with fear and rage.
