    Flemish American

    Greetings Skadi Forum,

I am a Flemish American. My father was born in Gent, my grandparents came from two small villages in West Flanders. On my blog (www.flemishamerican.blogspot.com ) I write about two things: the Flemish contribution to the discovery and settlement of America; the need for an independent Flemish Republic (with eventual unification with the northern Netherlands).

It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance,

Welcome to Skadi, de bende van.

I think most people here support either an independent Flanders or unification with the Netherlands.

    Thank you Blod og Jord

Thank you very much Blod og Jord! It is great to be a part of a forum in which these ideas are accepted.

BTW, what aspects of Danish/Germanic interests do you focus on?

    Friendly greetings,

    Welcome here, de bende van.
I've some curiosities about the Flemish in America if you don't mind. Is it a strong group? Have your family taught you the language and cultural aspects?

I've to admit I didn't know so much about the Flemish contribution to the discovery and settlement of America. I'll be reading the informations on your blog.

I personally focus on the pagan religion of Danes, on Scandinavians/Nordics and their culture, but I'm also interested in modern culture and its effect on the Danes. I also have some interest in Northern Germany, because I have some small ancestry from there.

Well this is just me personally. On the forum anything about Germanics can be discussed. There are sections for history, politics, linguistics, law, philosophy, religion, arts and so on.

    Thank you Siebenbürgerin

    Hello Siebenbürgerin,

Thank you very much for your very kind words. The sad reality is that although ethnically there are more than 1 million Flemish Americans, in reality the number who keep the language and cultural traditions alive is very, very small.

I grew up in a small enclave in Chicago where we spoke the language as children, went to church together where the services (Roman Catholic) were in Vlaams and had a great deal of our cultural contact with other Flemings in the evenings and weekends. Virtually all the Flemish in Chicago were janitors (my father, grandfather, and all uncles). So that reinforced the cultural and language transmission.

But assimilation has greatly weakened our ties. The reason I started my blog is so that my sons would have some written record. They do know Flemish history. But even in my generation very few do know it. For example, neither my brother, sisters, or cousins can really speak the language anymore. None of them know the most important date in Flemish history (July 11, 1302) and although they still have a few cultural ties (food, phrases, etc.) essentially they have been subsumed into the melting pot.

It is quite sad. How is it for you and your ties? Do you have some connection to Flanders?

    Danish-Flemish Ties

    Blod og Jord,

That sounds very interesting. I am aware of some nascent Flemish-Danish ties in the 800s-900s with Christian missionaries from Thorhout (a Flemish town a few kilometers from where my ancestors lived since at least the 1200s). There were also some Flemings with some of the first Norse visitors to Markland and Vinland as well as Greenland. But now I will need to dig deeper!

Hmm, I see. Thanks for the explanations. I'm seeing it's a common case these days in the USA. I agree it's a sad thing.

About me. I was born here and my ancestors too, for many generations. We keep culture and language, but we are lucky to be represented by an ethnic minority party, the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania. Nonetheless, I've made the decision to move together with my boyfriend to Germany in the next years, because the numbers of the Transylvanian Saxons are dwindling. Most have gone to Germany already.

The Transylvanian Saxons have some of their origins in Flanders. Besides that, I've no personal ties with Flanders. Nonetheless, I've a special curiosity about the Germanic enclaves of Europe and the ethnic minorities living there. I support independence for Flanders from the construct of Belgium which is an artificial one in my view. I'm against megastructures which don't respect the rights to selfdetermination of differing peoples. I guess that explains my view, in a nutshell.

    Transylvania and Flanders

    Siebenbürgerin,

That is a very interesting fact. I admire the fact that your people have kept their ties and culture intact. Do you have any details on the tie with Flanders? I am quite interested in that.

    Thank you,

    de bende van...
