    How English Are You?

Inspired by a recent thread (http://forums.skadi.net/showthread.php?t=130185), and a number of threads on other boards claiming England to be a mongrel nation. I don't think this thread has been done before, and if it has, we have a new stock of people here now.

This poll is mainly for the English-born members, but feel free to chip in as long it's clear in your profile that you're not English born.

For the purposes of the poll, 'other British' means Scottish, Welsh, Irish, Channel Islands, Manx etc.) 'Other European' means continental European.

    Thanks.

Edit: And I forgot "Half English, half other British", so if that's you, I'm sorry

I would best fit into the one you forgot, since I am 50:45 (English:other British, assuming you include Ireland).

I was not born in England, but as is obvious, almost all of my family are British immigrants. All of my grandparents were born under a Union Jack flag.

Also I have tabs open in my browser about proper Afternoon Tea, if that counts for something.

I would consider myself English by descent, nature and nurture, but, I am one eighth welsh - the rest of my ancestry (some of which I've traced back to the 1500's) are from the Boston area of Lincolnshire, Bedfordshire, Durham, but mostly North Yorkshire including Whitby, Runswick and the Esk valley.
How easy it will be to find somebody Totally English is another question.

You sound very much like me. I'm also 7/8ths English. The other 1/8th is Irish (Westmeath). My ancestry's mainly West Yorkshire (specifically Wakefield, Castleford and Bradford), but I also have ancestry in every riding (Barnsley, S. Yorkshire; Beverley, E. Yorkshire; Thirsk, N. Yorkshire) and also Durham, Lincoln, Leicestershire, Cumbria and Norfolk, some lineages going back to the early 16th century.

I think it's possible to be fully English, tbh. My mother almost is, although she has one Welsh surname way back in her ancestry. Pretty impressive for a northerner, I'd say. I imagine it's much easier to be fully English if your heritage is restricted to market towns or the country.

I suppose this is where my username fails me I have selected half English, half British out of uncertainty. Until genetics and eugenics becomes a more mainstream subejct again, we have no real way of knowing exactly what percentage we are of anything.

We all know that the further north you go from the equator, the lighter the skin and hair becomes... in a gradient way, and that this ties in roughly to racial groupings. In recent history (1...2000 years?) the clarity has become less defined due to human population growth and travel. Racial groupings would have once been quite clearly defined, perhaps to the point of knowing which tribe within 1 part of a country someone came from by looks alone.

I have relatives who look like how you imagine a typical saxon/northmen, and others who have a more indigenous British heritage, darker haired with ancestry from Scotland and Ireland. But this is never an accurate thing to guess, since we know that in recent history all different types of north euros invaded Ireland and Scotland. You can just as easily find blonde haired Irish and Scottish people who look very germanic, and a red haired german who you would associate more with our Isles.

I think location is irrelevant within reason, looks and genes will decide where we are most likely to "fit" in traditionally

"Tacitus records the physical characteristics of the Caledonians (picts) as red hair and long limbs."
