    Straight Edge

I can be labelled under Straight Edge, I use no hard or soft drugs, no cola, no coffee or anything that can be labelled as soft drugs.

The term was coined by the 1980s hardcore punk band Minor Threat in the song "Straight Edge".

It was a reaction too the overwhelming drug use of punks, most punks even now hate Straight Edge which is hypocrite of them, if they are really against capitalism and multinationals then why do they support it so much by buying drugs from them.

The Straight Edge scene in my land is small, well, small, I never found a Straight Edge scene in my land, I never went out to disco’s or other popular going out places, but it is basic knowledge that sniffing cocaine and swallowing drug pills is normal there, how i would love to rebel there and burn down these decadent places.

I have heard from a friend that the metalscene in Belgium has changed very much, they use to only drink beer and some would smoke, but these days its suddenly normal to sniff cocaine at a Black Metal concert (Varg Vikernes should have called it a stereotypical homosexual drug scene), people disliked hard drugs in the metalscene here, it was something for idiots and disco people, but that sure changed...

I am sick of the hypocrisy of people who say:

    1: They are anti-capitalism/consumption industry/multinationals

2: People who say that by using drugs you do not hurt anyone

    Ohno ? then read this:

Cocaine industry is killing the rainforest

Cocaine-users across the world are helping to destroy the Amazon rainforest.

Eighty per cent of the world's supply of the drug comes from Colombia, and Dr Rodriguez said 70% of this was now grown in the Amazon region.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/2384303.stm

Of course the greenleft party didn't say anything about this, i even read that the party leader has used cocaine, typical champaign socialists.

    The legal Tobacco:

Examples of smoking experiments on animals:

-Cutting holes in beagles' throats through which the dogs are forced to breathe concentrated cigarette smoke for a year.
-Strapping masks to the faces of rats and monkeys and permanently restraining them to force them to breathe cigarette smoke constantly.
    More here:
    http://www.smokinganimals.com/facts.html

But where ever I go I am attacked for being ''Straight Edge'', well, so be it, so I went to the hart of the drug world in the West which is Amsterdam, i made a very big anti-weed patch that i carried on my backpack, people where shocked, i could even hear it, I think I was the first person in Amsterdam who ever did this, all these stupid leftist who think they are rebelling against society and the government by smoking weed while its legal! everywhere in Amsterdam you see weed places, so if they really want to rebel against society and the government they should not use drugs, but they live in a world that has not existed for 40 years now, the anti-conformist have become the new conformist.

So, any comments about it ?

Minor Threat, Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Judge... I listened to it all when I was a teenager. Me and a few of my friends even wore the X's on our hands when we were 15.

It didn't last long though. A year later, when I was 16, I started drinking and partying and experimenting with a variety of drugs, a period which lasted several years, and I'm sure I killed a lot of brain cells in the process. I regret all of it; they were wasted years. Thankfully a stint in the military set me straight.

I still enjoy social drinking around once or twice a month, meeting up with friends and getting a "social buzz," as we call it, but I've learned how to keep myself under control. Haven't vomited in years.

Anyway, Straight Edge is too strict for me, besides the fact that most of its adherents aren't too friendly towards nationalism. But if you think it is something you want to embrace, then go for it I say.

Yeah, that's pretty lame. And I guarantee you that Ian MacKaye, front man of Minor Threat and coiner of the term "straight edge," would vigorously disagree with his self-proclaimed Belgian disciples. It's not about the music at all, it's just a philosophy of clean-living.

Your post really got me strolling down memory lane. How'd those lyrics go again?

I'm a person just like you, but I've got better things to do, than sit around and f*ck my head, hang out with the living dead, snort white sh*t up my nose, pass out at the shows. Always wanna keep in touch, never wanna use a crutch.

I've got the straight edge! I've got the straight edge!

    Or something like that.

Strangely enough, Minor Threat actually helped pave the way for black metal.

It's undeniable that Slayer played a critical role in setting the stage for black metal. The metal genre was forever changed with the release of Slayer's "Reign in Blood." A big reason for that was the machine-gun double-bass technique pioneered by their drummer, Dave Lombardo, who has cited the high-tempo sonic mayhem of Minor Threat as one of his early influences. Guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King also credit Minor Threat as an inspiration.

But I digress. You can live a straight-edge lifestyle without having to bow to the dictates of the mainstream straight-edge scene. Just do it your own way.

I don't care about the punk scene or whatever but posts like this give me hope. We should try to improve ourselves- not stupify ourselves. In the very least you are weak and stupid when intoxicated- such actiosn should be minimilized. I keep hearing from our Marxists agitators that doing drugs makes you smarter, cooler, more creative etc. Maybe using softer drugs in a very limited amount could have benefits, possibly not. But generally I've never seen it. I've only seen drugs make people worse off in life, make them dumber, lazier, more irrational and erratic etc. I've never heard of someone say their life was all messed up until they got on drugs and became better. It's silly. I think music, TV etc. are used as tools by our enemies to subjegate the masses. Drugs are just a way to make us docile slaves. currently now the big trend is with prescription pills. When I went to the hospitol before the doctor would ask "are you in pain?" I would say no and he'd give me a prescription for some strong narcotic and ask me to take it. So I would even be a bit cuatious about prescribed drugs. It's all a tool to make money and to placate people. Soma in 1984.

You don't need a modern subculture to live a life of dignity, drug free if one desires. Just don't do drugs, it's that simple. Adherence to a subculture signals that you think that you cannot find what you are looking for in terms of values in your own heritage. But that is hardly the case. Even if moderate alcohol consumption and tobacco use is common in your family history, and in your heritage, refraining from drinking and smoking is not equal to turning your back on your own heritage.

You don't need to adopt a bizzarre clothing style or search for a commercialized modern identity to feel as though you can live according to your values, as if your own heritage didn't already provide you with a positive identity and a set of morals and values which are far superior than anything thought up amongst juvenile and immature individuals born into a modern world, cut off from that same heritage.

If you want to start beating Germanics over the head for drinking beer or spirits and demand that they follow your example, or else, then it might cause some conflict, but even then would you not have any solid reason to give up your own identity in favor of an alien one. And if you simply want to abstain from drinking yourself but allow others to drink then I don't see why you would want to identify yourself with this straight edge ideology at all.

Modern subcultures serve not one purpose that one's own heritage cannot fill.

A lot of friends attempted straight edge.. with the 'X' on the back of their hands or on their forearms.
Only one of them still is I believe. I didn't bother because I enjoy my ale and mead too much
Though I have full respect for anyone who has used drugs, consumed alcohol and has given it all up.

Isn't the racist/folkish thing a sub-culture itself? Just a little hard to find many people in one's area that fit into the genre. Most of us I think as well don't come from families with the same beliefs. It's funny bettering yourself is an act of rebellion anymore. Getting an education and staying sober- rebellion.

    Good for you

The term was coined by the 1980s hardcore punk band Minor Threat in the song "Straight Edge".
Would it surprise you that most kids who listened to Minor Threat did so while they were high?

It was a reaction too the overwhelming drug use of punks, most punks even now hate Straight Edge...
Many of those early Straight Edgers were Sex Pistols fans who beheld the self-destruction of people like Sid Viscous.
They felt that punk could offer the quality of the music without all of that nihilist posturing.
After all, it is the music that counts the most.

    So, any comments about it?
Straight Edge has evolved since those early days. Here in the states, it has become more of a passing fad.
You may be surprised to know that a majority of the more orthodox members are rabidly anti-racist. Many of them are closet Ska fans.
I can assure you that you might even be physically attacked if they got even the slightest hint that you were a "racist".

Sadly, Straight Edge also tends to attract what is known as the preachy type.
They are very much in your face and exclude anyone, even other drug-free punks, who do not "take it to the extreme".
The following mug shot is of a preach-with-your-fists individual named Clinton Marvin:

(Please take note of the multi-cultural maori tattoo on his chin. )

Clinton is a very good example of the worst that Straight Edge has to offer.
Back in the 1990s he and a gang of fellow Straight Edgers attacked people with tire irons, bats, chains and brass knuckles.
What was their crime? Smoking cigarettes. They even sprayed mace on the offending smokers.
This is one of the main reasons why Straight Edge has never really been popular on a larger scale.

As a former hard drug abuser myself, the thing I hated the most was someone who gave me the usual 'Your killing yourself' sermon.
This only made me want to use drugs all the more, if only to spite these people, who did not seem to understand that they were being condescending.
But, the Straight Edgers are perfectly aware that they are being condescending and it is this attitude that made them even more repellent to me.

In America, some gangs have physically attacked those who they felt were not Straight Edge enough.
Some even go so far as to not take legal drugs, like tylenol, and defiantly sit there with a splitting headache.
The most devoted types also abstain even from sex, even if it is safe, something which I certainly do not agree with.

Like most youth movements, it has to keep reinventing itself in order to constantly attract younger yet-to-be-disillusioned types, and the majority of people who try Straight Edge become alienated very quickly.
They gave up after only a few months, because they saw all too clearly that the movement had no effect whatsoever on society.
In fact, they only saw that drug-use continued to increase regardless.

In short, I advocate Straight Edge as a personal thing, but not on a large scale.
The only way the large groups can make themselves heard to non-Straight Edgers is to resort to common thuggery.
When you resort to this, nobody will listen anyway.

Ultimately, Straight Edge cannot be anything else but preachy.
I have known a few of the non-preachers (the only ones I ever liked).
They were condemned by the other Straight Edgers because of this, and therefore were shunned as a result.
How ironic that they could only find friends among the drug-using Punks and Metal Heads!

Dietsch, I am glad you have chosen to be sober.
But, I cannot agree with whole Straight Edge thing until it can find another way to appeal to kids without having to harrass people in the process.
