    South Africa Business Dispute Sets Off Racism Charges

    A struggle over how to manage South Africa’s state-owned power company has opened debates on racism in the boardroom and political meddling in a country where politics and race remain a volatile mix.

    Chairman Bobby Godsell and CEO Jacob Maroga were brought in recently to turn around Eskom, a utility that has been troubled for years, but they could not agree on strategy. In a statement Thursday, Eskom’s board said both men were out, and that an acting chairman was in sole charge until a new chair and CEO were named.

    Accusations are being made that Maroga was being pushed out because he is black. The youth wing of the ruling African National Congress party said: “The time of treating black people . . . as subjects, who can be fired as and when the white master wishes is over.”

    The Black Management Forum, an independent lobby group, said state-owned companies were becoming “slaughterhouses for the black professionals recruited to head them” because white board members did not want to give up control of the economy 15 years after the end of white political rule.

    But the secretary general of the National Union of Mineworkers, who is black, defended Godsell, saying the former mining company executive was no racist and pointing out that most of Eskom’s board members are black.

    Godsell resigned Monday, saying the government had not supported the board in its dispute with Maroga. Godsell said then that Maroga had offered to resign Oct. 28, then later denied resigning.

    Thursday’s statement said Maroga’s “clear and unambiguous” offer to resign was accepted and stands.

    “The board recognizes that Mr. Maroga’s resignation brings uncertainty,” the statement added, saying acting chairman Mpho Makwana “maintains that while this is a difficult time for Eskom, he is confident that the organization remains focused on the job at hand and will continue to power South Africa’s economy.”

    {snip}

    In South Africa, Eskom blamed a 2008 electricity crisis on years of under-investment and rising demand. Widespread power cuts hit the industrial hub of Johannesburg and at one stage gold and platinum mines—the backbone of the national economy—had to stop production because of lack of power.

    In a statement this week, a multiracial group of business leaders said Eskom’s management problems needed to be quickly resolved, so that the utility could play a part in helping South Africa recover from the global recession.

    It does not surprise me that they make such accusations. First of all they are incapable of accepting the fact that this Maroga is unfit for the job. And that was probably the main reason why he was pushed out.

    Second, these cries of racism is a source of power for them. The charges are used to instill a sense of guilt. And that sense of guilt is used to extort money, goods and prestigious/influential positions from the productive whites.

    He apparently spoke of a "technocratic arrogance" and a "White supervisor mentality" brought about by making use of external consulting.

    Notice the cycle: first they blame racism for the lack of Blacks in important positions, so they put policies in place to push out White professionals. That leaves them with a lack of internal experts, which necessitates making use of external experts - who is still White. Now they want to blame the current situation again on racism, brought about by this relationship with the "technocratic White supervisors".

    By the way, our electricity costs, i.e. what we pay to the struggling parastatal power utility mentioned in the article above, will almost tripple over the next three years.

    All of this is smoke and mirrors to keep on defeating the white minority of South African electrical users we are subsidizing the promises made by the ANC to ultimately keep them in power. The more outcry they create with the claims of racism the more legitimized their position in demanding the increased tariffs for electricity becomes. Blacks keep on bartering with the economy in order to keep their position as long as they can. While all of this blatant mismanagement is going on they are further loading the apartheid guilt wagon with the excessive costs that are being levied by the ANC to keep providing blacks and the naboring countries with electricity. Where is all this leading? We have already had a 33% increase in the last year. Next Year it will be raised by another 45% and again 45% the next year, where will all this stop. The collapse of the economy one might hope. While Germanic South-Africans keep on participating in the economy there are going to be these problems. The ANC will not be able to fund its terror state if Germanics stop taking part in the fracas we call South Africa today.
    Although the word "Commando" was wrongly used to describe all Boer soldiers, a commando was a unit formed from a particular district. None of the units was organized in regular companies, battalions or squadrons. The Boer commandos were individualists who were difficult to control, resented formal discipline or orders, and earned a British jibe that"every Boer was his own general".
