Why Are Scots So Attracted to the Labour Party?

Is it simply the redistribution of English wealth?

Labour's big thing is "Not forgetting the poor", when invariably the poor consist of celtic and now other immigrants immigrants on council estates and inner cities. The English collectively spend hundreds of millions supporting Scottish and Welsh welfare dependents.

When Labour really was a political party of social reform, it was natural for the Scots to support it as they believed that the alternative was to have all their interests decided upon by toffee nosed aristocratic Tories and Liberals living in London. For them, it was a case of the absentee Landlord or Laird all over again. Therefore, Labour, with it’s ‘working class’ credentials was their only hope!

But they, like the rest of us, have witnessed the slow decline and eventual death of what was once a people’s party. The SNP is a very poor substitute, and in my opinion only hangs on to the Scottish psyche by the swish of the Kilt and the skirl of the Pipes…not much else!

Because of their formerly close association with the Labour movement, naturally we saw many prominent Scottish figures in its political ranks, but that is now ending. The current crop is the ‘fag end’ of that involvement and are themselves like their party of old, a dying breed.

I can't understand the poor results for the BNP in Glasgow of all places. They have rising unemployment, increasing numbers of immigrants and Glasgow was the scene of the terrible racist murder of 15 year old Kriss Donald http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Kriss_Donald

I live in a small town where in the local council elections the BNP managed 600 votes. For them to get just over a 1000 in a city like Glasgow, I find unbelievable. would and Scottish members care to comment?

I'm not from Scotland, but I expected the BNP to get around 1000 votes in Glasgow NE. It's not a great result by any stretch of the imagination, but not bad considering the location - Glasgow is traditionally a red/left-wing city. Voting Labour or socialist is traditional up there.
